    Analysis

Last week marked Coast Guard’s best offensive output of the season in a 37-33 loss at Nichols, but the worst scoring total the defense has allowed. The Bears trailed 16-7 at halftime before unleashing 26 points in the second half, 20 in the fourth quarter. Coast Guard, driving for the win in the final moments, was intercepted in the end zone on the last play of the game. “I just wish they wouldn’t have waited so long to get going,” Coast Guard coach C.C. Grant said of the rally. “We came out on the opening drive and scored, then we kind of got stale for awhile. Spence (McMillion, 190 yards rushing, 4 TDs) played lights out. Overall, you can’t fault the offense; they put up 33 points. Defensively, we didn’t play a very good game.” ... Coast Guard’s offense was aided by freshman Broock Desta, who caught 10 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. Desta also returned six kicks for 198 yards, with a long of 44 yards, now leading the Bears in all-purpose yards with 171.5 per game. Fellow freshman Amr Baadani, who has 11 catches for 201 yards receiving, did not play Saturday due to a hip flexor he suffered earlier in the week. Baadani was cleared to play this week, but Grant said it will likely not be full force. Desta missed the Week 1 game with the University of New England due to a broken finger. “Him and Amr are probably more than what we thought they would be,” Grant said of the duo, both of whom played last year at Naval Academy Prep. “They haven’t been on the field at the same time yet.” ... Anna Maria scored 26 unanswered points last week to come from behind for a 26-14 win over Mass. Maritime. Quarterback Alex Cohen was 30-for-43 for 282 yards and two TDs, while receiver Devin Tolbert had 10 catches for 60 yards. Anna Maria rushed for only 18 yards in the game and averages just 75 yards rushing per game. Coast Guard’s Grant calls Cohen, however, “the best pocket quarterback we’ve seen all year.” “They have good skill guys on the outside,” Grant said. “Their receivers are outstanding. The guy who beat us last year in the last minute of the game (receiver Deandre Wallace), he’s back, too.” ... Anna Maria took last year’s game 29-24 in New London with Cohen hitting Wallace for a 27-yard touchdown with 21 seconds remaining for the victory. Coast Guard took a 24-17 lead on a 67-yard TD pass from Tafari Wall to Damaso Jaime with 55 seconds left in the third before Anna Maria responded on the next play to pull within 24-23. ... This is Coast Guard’s last nonleague game before entering New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play next week at Norwich. The Bears return home Oct. 8 for a Parents Weekend game against Springfield.
