Ansonia, Barlow move into Top 10 of Day coaches’ poll

An old familiar face and a new one moved into The Day’s Top 10 state coaches’ poll this week.

Ansonia (6-0) moved up to No. 9 after battling past Holy Cross last Thursday 31-28 in a game between unbeaten Naugatuck Valley League teams. The game featured seven lead changes.

The Chargers fell out of the Top 10 after Week 4 when both Hamden and North Haven made big jumps ahead of them. They even earned more points at that time than they had the previous week when they were No. 10.

Barlow (6-0) makes its season debut as the new No. 10. It earned more respect this week after it drubbed then-unbeaten New Fairfield 47-13 last Friday.

The Falcons scored 33 points on five touchdowns in the second quarter alone, including four touchdowns in the final 3 minutes, 37 seconds of the first half, to go ahead 40-0.

Barlow faces its toughest challenger to date this Friday, however, when it travels to Newtown (5-1), a perennial power in the South-West Conference. The latter has been so dominant for so long in that league that Barlow has not beaten it since 2005.

Ansonia and Barlow both moved into the Top 10 after losses last Friday by Shelton (ninth) and Notre Dame-West Haven (No. 10).

Shelton lost to No. 5 West Haven 34-28. Notre Dame was rocked by Cheshire (5-1) 27-12.

Southington (6-0, six first-place votes) and New Canaan (6-0, three first-place votes) remain first and second, respectively.

Greenwich (5-1) moved to third, switching places in the process with Maloney (6-0, three first-place votes). Greenwich beat Trumbull last Thursday 37-24.

West Haven received the other first-place vote.

St. Joseph (5-1), Hamden (6-0) and North Haven (5-1) are sixth-eighth, respectively.

The Eastern Connecticut Conference continues to have two teams receiving votes — No. 12 Windham (6-0) and No. 16 Killingly (5-1).

The week’s biggest game will be on Friday night when St. Joseph travels to New Canaan (7). Other games of note are Valley Regional/Old Lyme (6-0) at defending CIAC Class S champion Cromwell/Portland (6-0), Friday, 6:30 p.m.; Fairfield Prep (3-3) at Shelton (4-2), Friday, 7 p.m.; North Haven at Cheshire, Friday, 7 p.m.; and Greenwich at defending Class LL champion Darien (4-2), Saturday, 2 p.m.
