    H.S. roundup: Old Lyme boys advance to Shoreline semis

    Old Lyme — Fourth-seeded Old Lyme defeated No. 5 Portland 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference boys’ soccer tournament on Saturday.

    The Wildcats (7-5-5) will visit top-seeded East Hampton in Tuesday’s semifinals at 4 p.m.

    Anders Silberberg gave Old Lyme a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal. Cole Bates tied it by converting a penalty kick for the Highlanders before Luke Celic, assisted by Aidan Kerrigan, scored the game-winner for the Wildcats.

    Old Lyme goalie Jonah Lathrop made five saves.

    In other matches:

    • Diego Virgen scored a pair of unassisted goals as East Lyme completed its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Waterford. Virgen’s first goal came off a corner kick and his second following a scramble in front of the net. Connor Piper made two saves to earn the shutout for the Vikings (10-3-3) while Ben Dubicki stopped 11 shots in goal for the Lancers (6-8-2).

    • Jose Pacheco had a goal and an assist as St. Bernard scored all of its goals in the second half during a 3-0 win over Griswold. Ben Syphrett and Connor Harris each added a goal for the Saints (14-1-1), Marc Sauchuk had an assist and goalie Dan O’Brien made six saves. Dylan Freyer stopped seven shots in goal for Griswold (6-8-1).

    • Drew Ferrigno, assisted by Nico Matteucci, scored the game’s only goal in the first half as Bacon Academy edged Norwich Free Academy 1-0. Evan St. Louis made six saves in goal for the Bobcats (12-2-2). NFA is 9-5-1.

    • Cam Weber’s goal in the 72nd minute lifted Ledyard to a 1-0 victory over Woodstock Academy. Peyton Luther earned the assist, beating two defenders and turning the corner to find Weber inside the near post. Paul Templeton stopped four shots for the Colonels (9-6-1).

    • Nike Churis, assisted by Frankee Morocho, scored the lone goal for New London in a 4-1 loss at Lyman Memorial. The Whalers finish 0-14-1 and Lyman finishes 5-10-1.

    Girls’ soccer

    • Goalies by Maya Pitruzzello and Sarina McCollum (penalty kick) helped East Lyme defeat Waterford 2-0 in the regular-season finale. Ava Lombardo assisted on Pitruzzello’s goal for the Vikings (10-6) and goalie Morgan Dube made eight saves. Victoria Sturm stopped six shots for the Lancers (6-8-2).

    • Marlee Anselmi scored two goals in the first half, both assisted by Skylar Frost, as Williams defeated Forman 3-1. Anselmi returned the favor by setting up Frost for the final goal in the second half for the Blues.

    Volleyball

    • Wheeler ended its regular season with a 25-11, 26-24 and 25-21 non-league win over Norwich Tech. Michelle Macina had six kills and five aces for the Lions (14-5) while Addison Stanley added four blocks and three kills and Anna Ruggeri 18 assists and six aces. Kaylee Gray had six kills and 12 digs for the Warriors (10-9) and Abby Ulrich added 11 digs.

    Football

    • James Green rushed for 124 yards on 11 carries and scored four touchdowns as Ledyard defeated Montville 52-14 on Friday night. Quarterback Jackson Poulton was 2-for-2 for 69 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 151 yards on three carries and a touchdown for the Colonels (6-1). Jacob Lenz was on the receiving end of Poulton’s TD pass and also had a pair of interceptions, one for a touchdown, and recorded seven tackles.

    Swimming

    • Fitch/Stonington/NL/Wheeler defeated NFA 100-64 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference meet on Friday night. Sarah Tarinelli (200-yard freestyle), Addison Fulling (200 IM), Sophia Pacheco (100 butterfly), Elliot Singer (100 free) and Delaney Reck (100 backstroke) won individual events for the Falcons while Natalie Bezanson won the 500 free for the Wildcats, Stephanie Herr the 100 breaststroke, and Bezanson teamed with Mercedes Aleksjuka, Stephanie Wells and Gianna Lennon to win the 400 free relay.
