    Local college roundup: Coast Guard rallies to beat MIT 31-24

    Cambridge, Mass. — Spencer McMillion carried the ball 37 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns as Coast Guard Academy rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit to defeat MIT 31-24 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference football game on Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium.

    The Bears (3-5, 1-3) snapped a three-game losing streak by scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half.

    After Nico Bulhof’s 31-yard field goal with 57 seconds left in the first half gave the MIT (2-5, 0-4) its 14-point halftime lead, Coast Guard came to life in the second half.

    Quarterback Joey Armentrout scored from a yard out just 3:35 into the third quater to pull the Bears within 17-10, and McMillion broke free for a 49-yard touchdown run with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to cap a 12-play, 73-yard drive and tie the game at 17-17.

    Armentrout snapped the tie with a 17-yard touchdown run with 10:34 remaining and McMillion’s 15-yard TD run with 3:21 to go put the Bears up 31-17.

    Finnegan Hall kicked all four extra points for CGA and nailed a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter.

    Armentrout completed 19 of 34 passes for 190 yards while Broock Desta had seven receptions for 64 yards. Logan Morris and Connor Healy each had an interception for the Bears and Morris finished with a game-high nine tackles.

    Men’s soccer

    • Reigning NCAA Division III champion Connecticut College began its postseason by surprising top-seeded Bowdoin in a penalty kick shootout in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. After playing to a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 more of overtime, the Camels won the shootout 3-1 to advance to next Saturday’s semifinals at No. 2 Williams at 11 a.m.

    Goalie Peter Silvester stopped three PKs during the shootout for Conn while Steve Yeonas, Augie Djerdjaj and Jack Marvel converted their kicks for the Camels. Yeonas, assisted by Matt Scoffone, scored in the second half for Conn (7-5-4) and Silvester made seven saves.

    • Dylan Lucey of Lyman Memorial and New London’s Flavio Alvarado scored goals as Mitchell College finished its regular season with a 2-0 win over Lesley in the New England Collegiate Conference. Stonington’s Joey Rosa in the shutout in goal for the Mariners (5-10, 2-4).

    Women’s soccer

    • Top-seeded Amherst defeated No. 8 Conn College 3-0 in the NESCAC quarterfinals. Three different players scored for Amherst (14-2), which will host the tournament semifinals and final next weekend. Sarah Hall made three saves in goal for the Camels (7-6-3).

    Men’s cross country

    • Mitchell captured the NECC Championship meet in Henniker, N.H., its first conference title in program history. Freshman Albert Franck of Norwich and Ledyard High School captured individual honors in 18:45 and earned NECC Runner and Rookie of the Year honors. Collin Rider of NFA was fifth in 20:24, Liam Robb was seventh in 20:56 and Timothy O'Hayre was ninth in 22:10.

    • Conn College had a pair of top 10 finishers to place fourth as a team in the NESCAC Championships in Clinton, N.Y. It was Conn’s best finish since 2017, when it was also fourth. Matt Carter placed third overall in 24:00 and Love was sixth in 24:25. Both earned All-NESCAC honors. Brendan Mellitt (35th, 25:23), Matt Scardigno (43rd, 25:37) and Jonathan Norton (51st, 25:47) completed the Camels’ top five.

    Women’s cross country

    • Conn placed ninth in the NESCAC Championships as senior Julia Curran finished 13th overall in 22:09 to earn All-NESCAC honors for the first time. In addition, Lauren Hino placed 40th (23:05), Alsacia Timmerman 58th (23:37), Grace McDonough 90th (24:23) and Alex Estes 92nd (24:26).

    • Mitchell finished second behind Lesley in the NECC Championship as Abigail Rasmussen of Montville earned All-NECC honors by placing second in 24:04. Emma Labreck (36:58), Hannah Lemke (40:08), Brooke Taylor (40:08) and Jenna Bennett (41:04) rounded out the scoring for the Mitchell women.

    Volleyball

    • Mitchell ended its regular season by sweeping Lesley by 3-0 scores in the NECC. The Mariners (12-11, 2-4) won the opener 25-7, 25-9 and 25-8, then cruised to a 25-8, 25-3 and 25-1 win on the second game. Lexy Hanes, Sarah Aviles and Bree Rudolph registered five kills apiece in the first game, while Allison Blum had a match-high eight digs, and Sa'Mya Epps handed out match high 14 assists. Rudolph had six kills and five aces in the second game while Aviles had five kills, Julianna Repace seven digs and Epps 13 assists and nine aces.

    • First-place and No. 19 MIT defeated Coast Guard 25-18, 25-10 and 25-15 in the NEWMAC. Shannon Shaw led the Bears (18-6, 5-5) with eight kills Noelle Tursky added six kills, nine assists and four digs and Kaela France had eight digs.
