    H.S. roundup: Vikings reach Class L volleyball semis

    East Lyme – East Lyme advanced to the semifinals of the CIAC Class L volleyball tournament on Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over sixth-seeded Bristol Eastern.

    The No. 3 Vikings won by game scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-10.

    Skylar Bell had 18 digs and seven aces for the Vikings while Addison Soleau added 10 kills and Shae McMunn had 20 assists.

    East Lyme (18-5) will play No. 7 Bristol Central, a 3-1 winner over No. 2 Suffield on Saturday night, in Wednesdays semifinals at a site and time to be determined.

    Football

    • Thames River remained unbeaten with a 47-0 victory over Platt Tech of Milford. Jack Philistin threw four touchdown passes for the Crusaders (8-0), three to Justin Outlow, who also ran for a touchdown, while Cedrick Similien had an interception as the defense posted its sixth shutout. Thames River remained on track to earn a Class MM playoff berth.

    Cross country

    • Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert placed 13th in the girls’ race while Stonington’s Ryan Gruczka was 20th in the boys’ race during the 87th New England Championships at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, R.I. Both earned All-New England honors with top 25 finishes.

    Gilbert, a freshman, finished the 5K course in 19:04.11 while Gruczka, a senior, was timed in 16:25.73 over the same course. Two other local athletes competed with East Lyme senior Brendan Fant finishing 43rd in the boys’ race (16:43.53) and Waterford sophomore Avery Maiese finishing 100th in the girls’ race (20:55.77).

    Connecticut schools won both the team championships with Hall capturing the boys’ title with 89 points and Glastonbury winning the girls’ race with 116 points.

    Girls’ soccer

    • Top-seeded Stonington saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to No. 8 Watertown in the Class M quarterfinals. The Bears finish 17-3.

    • Second-seeded East Catholic ousted No. 7 St. Bernard 2-1 in the Class S quarterfinals at Cheney Tech in Manchester. The Saints finish 10-5-3.

    • Wooster School won the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament title with a 5-4 victory over Williams School in New London. The Blues led 2-1 at the break courtesy of a pair of goals by senior Phoebe Taylor, but Wooster scored four unanswered goals at the start of the second half to open a 5-2 lead before Skylar Frost converted a pair of late direct kicks for Williams.

    Swimming

    • The following Norwich Free Academy athletes earned qualifying spots for Wednesday’s CIAC Class LL championship meet during at Cornerstone Pool in West Hartford during the trials, also at Cornerstone: 200-yard medley relay: 17. Natalie Bezanson, Stefanie Herr, Dianna Alarcon, Mercedes Aleksjuka, 2:22.90; 200 IM: 21. Bezanson, 2:25.24; 200 freestyle relay: 17. Alarcon, Gianna Lennon, Willow Ludlow, Stepanie Wells, 2:08.53; 400 freestyle relay: 15. Aleksjuka, Herr, Wells, Bezanson, 4:33.58.
