East Lansing, Mich. – Connecticut College seniors Matt Carter and Jeffrey love earned All-America status with top 40 finishes in Saturday’s NCAA Division III cross country championship meet at Forest Akers Golf Course.

The Camels, competing as a team for the first time since 2002, finished 24th on a cold snowy morning.

Carter placed 19th overall on the 8k course in 25:23.4 and Love finished 32nd in 25:32.7.

Also scoring for the Camels were were freshman Jonathan Norton, junior Brendan Mellitt and sophomore Matt Scardigno.

In the women’s race, Coast Guard Academy freshman Claire Semerod finished 79th overall in 23:13.3 while Conn senior Julia Curran was 103rd in 23:27.9 over the 6k course and Conn junior Lauren Hino was 178th in 23:58.9.

Men’s basketball

• Andrew Hartel and Billy Whalen each hit two clutch free throws in the final 12 seconds as Conn College defeated Roger Williams 68-62 for its third straight win. David Murray led the Camels (3-1) with 22 points and eight rebounds while Hartel, a 6-foot-9 center, finished with 16 points as Conn held a 42-12 scoring edge in the paint.

• New London’s Jalen Benson had 19 points, nine assists, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks as Mitchell College won its fourth straight game with an 80-60 win over St. Joseph’s (N.Y.) in the Cadet-Mariner Classic at Coast Guard. Alfonzo Stokes added 13 points for the Mariners (4-1) while Ahmani Browne had in 11 points and six rebounds, Robert Zirlis had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Wilton Causey came off the bench to score 10 points.

• Will Feldman scored 25 points, including four 3-pointers, as Lehman outlasted Coast Guard 65-57 in the Cadet-Mariner Classic. Jarrod Jackson scored 16 points to lead the Bears (1-3) while Declan Rooney added 12 points and Luke Farrell had 10 rebounds.

• Tyler Betsey had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead St. Thomas More past Massanutten Military 78-65 in the National Prep Championship Series at Albertus Magnus in New Haven. Louis Semona also scored 17 points for the Chancellors while Mirko Bramanti added 14 and Justin Menard had 11 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

• Merchant Marine outlasted Coast Guard 73-70 to remain unbeaten. Dorothy Stotts came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds for the Bears (1-3) while Julia Mann added eight points and eight rebounds.

Men’s hockey

• Junior forward Ryan Tverberg registered a goal and an assist as No. 8 UConn beat No. 14 UMass Lowell 4-2 in a Hockey East game at the XL Center. The Huskies (10-2-3, 7-2-2), who led Hockey East, bounced back from Friday night’s 3-2 overtime loss to Lowell (8-5, 5-3).

• Trinity College rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Conn College 5-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Cole Eichler scored his first collegiate goal to give the Camels (0-2, 0-2) a 1-0 lead before Anthony Quartieri, assisted by Will Winship, scored seven minutes later. Conn goalie Kellen Beauton of Colchester made 22 saves in his collegiate debut.

Women’s hockey

• Wesleyan avenged a 2-0 loss less than 24 hours earlier with a 1-0 victory of Conn College in the NESCAC. Chiara Christie scored in the first period for the Cardinals (1-1, 1-1) while goalie Eun-Bee Huh made 14 saves for the Camels (1-1, 1-1).

Men’s swimming

• Justin Finkel won three individual events but Conn College dropped its season and NESCAC opener to Middlebury, 152-145. Finkel won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.50), 100 free (47.75) and 100 butterfly (51.55) for the Camels while Kai Lisgarten added wins in the 1-meter dive (271.20) and 3-meter dive (242.70).

Women’s swimming

• Tiernan Shea had Conn College’s lone win in a 210-88 season and NESCAC-opening loss to Middlebury. Shea captured the 100-yard backstroke in 59.30 seconds.
