    Local roundup: Bacon freshman Riley Anderson captures State Open title in 50 freestyle

    New Haven – Bacon Academy freshman Riley Anderson captured the 50-yard freestyle during Sunday’s CIAC State Open swimming championships at Yale University.

    Anderson won the race in 23:07 seconds. She also placed seventh in the 100 butterfly (57.79), just missing out on all-state honors in two events (the top six finishers earn all-state status).

    Senior Delaney Reck of Stonington, who competes with the Fitch cooperative program, did earn all-state honors in the 100 backstroke with a sixth-place finish (59.51). She also finished 11th in the 50 free (24.48) to help the Falcons finish 17th in the team standings with 120 points. Ridgefield won the team championship with 478 points.

    Also scoring points for Fitch were Laura Letellier in the 100 breaststroke (11th, 1:08.68), Anna Orphanides in the 50 free (25.12) and Addison Fulling in the 100 free (23rd, 55.65) and 200 free (24th, 2:01.36).

    The Falcons also competed in all three relays with the 400 free team of Fulling, Jai-Lynn Wheeler, Orphanides and Reck placing 13th (3:34.74), the 200 medley team of Reck, Letellier, Orhpanides and Elliott Singer placing 14th (1:53.16) and the 200 free team of Fulling, Sian Crespo, Sophia Pacheco and Singer placed 23rd (1:44.62).

    Bacon also placed in two relays with the 200 free team of Sophia Falkowski, Isabella Falkowski, Avery Anderson and Riley Anderson placing 15th (1:43.52) and the 400 free team of the same four swimmers placing 24th (3:51.52).

    Women’s basketball

    • Division I Holy Cross survived an early scare before rallying for a 65-49 victory over Connecticut College in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders (3-1) trailed 20-12 after one quarter and 11 early in the second quarter before regrouping to beat the Camels (1-3).

    Jaycie Rojik paced Conn with 13 points and five rebounds in her first start of the season while Molly Cronin and Aislinn McMahon scored eight points apiece and Rebecca Oberman-Levine had six points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists.
