    Local roundup: New London’s Benson is NECC Player of the Week

    New London — Jalen Benson of Mitchell College was named the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball on Monday.

    Benson, the forward New London High standout, is a senior guard for the Mariners. He averaged 15.7 points, 5.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game as Mitchell went 3-0. Benson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Cadet-Mariner Classic last weekend at Mitchell and Coast Guard.

    UConn players honored

    • UConn’s Azzi Fudd and Adama Sanogo were each named the Big East Player of the Week in basketball. Fudd, a a sophomore guard, won the women’s honor. She had a pair of 32-point efforts against top 10 teams as the Huskies beat No. 3 Texas and No. 10 North Carolina State.

    Sanogo, a junior forward, took the men’s honor. Sanogo averaged 20.3 points and 6-3 rebounds per game as UConn went 3-0. UConn’s Alex Karaban was the men’s basketball Big East Freshman of the Week. He averaged 10.7 points and 3-3 rebounds in the three games.

    Conn’s Murray honored

    • David Murray of Connecticut College was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball. The junior forward averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as the Camels went 2-0.

    College notes

    • St. Bernard graduate Adelina Marcille is a junior at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford and on the women's swim team. She recently finished fourth in the Blue Jay Pentathlon with a total time of 3:45:27. She has been competing in the 50, 200 and 500 yard freestyle for the Blue Jays.

    • Former Lyman Memorial standout Meg Verizzi of Eastern Connecticut State was named to the Little East Conference all-star volleyball team as a second-team selection. She is a senior setter.

    • Griswold’s Logan Chappell of UMass Dartmouth made the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference football all-star team. The junior defensive back was a second-team selection.

    Thanksgiving football

    • Stonington hosts Westerly on Thursday in the 162nd Thanksgiving Day game between the two schools, the longest such rivalvy in the country. Gates open at 8:30 a.m., with kickoff scheduled for 10 a.m.

    All tickets are $5 and school officials are encouraging using exact change to speed up the process at all the gates. Backpacks will not be allowed.
