    Local roundup: Conn men end Mitchell’s eight-game win streak

    New London — Connecticut College ended Mitchell College’s eight-game winning streak with a convincing 82-68 men’s basketball victory on Saturday afternoon at Luce Fieldhouse.

    The Camels (8-2) took control from the start, bolting out to a 49-26 halftime lead and shooting 57.4% from the floor for the game. The Mariners (8-2) never got closer than 12 points the rest of the afternoon.

    Andrew Hartel came off the bench to score 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting for Conn while Cam Scainfield finished with 15 points and six assists, David Murray 14 points and five rebounds, Elias Espinosa 11 points and Jarron Flynn 10.

    Alfonzo Stokes had a double-double for Mitchell (23 points, 10 rebouinds), while Waterford’s Mickey Buscetto finished with 10 points and six assists and New London’s Jalen Benson had eight points and six rebounds.

    Women’s basketball

    • Conn outrebounded Mount Holyoke 47-23 and cruised to a 64-37 non-conference win. Charlotte Head came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points for the Camels (2-6), who led 41-18 at halftime, while Rebecca Oberman-Levine added 12 points and seven rebounds.

    • Amina Wiley recorded the 1,000th rebound of her career during Mitchell’s 101-45 loss to Division I Brown University in Providence. Wiley third rebound of the came, coming with 2:11 left in the second quarter, allowed to become the first player in program history to reach 1,000 rebounds. She finished with seven to go along with a team-high 20 points for the Mariners (3-5), while Dede Stevenson added 12 points.

    Boys’ fencing

    • East Lyme opened its season by winning all three games during an ECC tri-meet against host Bacon Academy and St. Bernard. The Vikings beat St. Bernard 7-2 in foil while defeating the Saints 8-1 and Bacon 7-2 in epee. St. Bernard beaet Bacon 6-3 in epee.

    • NFA swept a season-opening ECC meet at home, defeating Fitch 6-3 and Griswold 8-1 in foil, and Fitch 5-4 and Griswold 6-3 in epee. Fitch beat Griswold 6-3 in foil and also beat the Wolverines 7-2 in epee.

    Girls’ fencing

    • St. Bernard swept the epee competition and East Lyme the foil during a season-opening ECC tri-meet at Bacon Academy. The Saints beat East Lyme 8-1 and St. Bernard 7-2 in epee while the Vikings beat Bacon 7-2 and St. Bernard 7-2 in foil. East Lyme edged Bacon 5-4 in epee while Bacon beat the Saints 7-2 in foil.

    • NFA and Fitch split a season-opening ECC meet. The Falcons beat the Wildcats 7-2 in foil and NFA returned the favor with an 8-1 victory in epee.

    Men’s swimming

    • Conn College rolled to a 172-108 victory over Roger Williams. Justin Finkel and Matthew Morris each won two individual events and were part of winning relay teams while Kai Lisgarten captured both diving events and made his first cut for the NCAA Regional Championship in both the 1- and 3-meter events. He posted 304.95 points in the 1-meter competition and 312.37 in the 3-meter competition.

    Women’s swimming

    • Conn College won 14 of 16 events during a 188-92 win over Roger Williams. Hannah Guay won three individual events for the Camels while Sarah Daly and Vaughn Ammon each notched two individual and two relay wins.
