    Local roundup: East Lyme boys come from behind for OT win over Woodstock

    East Lyme — East Lyme outscored Woodstock Academy 16-4 in the fourth quarter, using a swarming press and a clutch 3-point field goal from Isaac Guavara, and went on to beat the Centaurs 56-55 in overtime Thursday night in high school boys’ basketball action.

    In overtime, Mike Timpano scored four of six points for East Lyme (2-1), which picked up its second win in as many nights.

    Gavin O’Brien led East Lyme with 18 points, John Bureau had 11 and Timpano finished with nine. The Vikings were 10-for-13 from the foul line.

    Brady Ericson had 14 points for Woodstock.

    On Wednesday, Brendan Osso scored 21 points, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line, as East Lyme won its first game with a 70-59 nonconference win at Morgan in Clinton. O’Brien added 14 points for the Vikings and Bureau had 10.

    In other games:

    • Jeff Souvenance had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Griswold in a 62-51 victory over Windham, keeping the Wolverines unbeaten at 4-0. Evan Merchant added 18 points and Christian Russell 16 for Griswold. Travis Mangual had 17 and Tyler Mangual 14 for Windham (3-1), the defending CIAC Division V champion. Griswold led 26-25 at halftime.

    • Luke Lowry scored 22 points, including three 3-point field goals, and Stonington edged Lyman Memorial 68-65. Alex DePerry added 18 points with three 3s and Aaron LoPresto had 15 for the Bears (3-1), who broke a 28-28 halftime tie by outscoring Lyman 19-11 in the third quarter. Kevin Botticello had 24 points for Lyman (3-1) and Jaiden Lopez 23.

    • Tyson Wheeler scored 23 points as unbeaten St. Bernard handed Fitch its first loss, 70-52. Amyre Gray had 17 points and Cedrick Similien scored 14 for the Saints (4-0). Mikey Wagner led Fitch (3-1) with 19 points.

    • Montville lost to Ellington 57-54. Anthony Barbuto scored 24 points for Montville (0-2).

    • Johnny Kazantzis had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Killingly to a 54-36 win over Wheeler. Yianni Baribeau had 10 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks and Thomas Dreibholz had 14 points and seven rebounds for Killingly (3-1). Kyle Kessler led Wheeler (1-2) with 12 points and Keith Zardies scored 10.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Bella Gerace had 16 points for Newtown in a 41-29 victory over Norwich Free Academy. NFA led 16-15 after the first half, but Newtown outscored the Wildcats 17-7 in the third quarter to claim the lead. Nevaeh Yorke had eight points for NFA (0-3) and Brooke Stringer seven.

    • Ava Roth finished with 25 points and six steals in Old Lyme’s 47-37 Shoreline Conference loss to Westbrook. Freshman Sybil Neary added nine points and four rebounds for Old Lyme (1-3, 1-2).

    • Contessa Davis and Steph Tamburrino had 14 points each for O’Brien Tech in a 41-12 victory over Grasso Tech. Melanie Hernandez had four points for Grasso (1-3).

    Hockey

    • The Eastern CT Eagles picked up their first win of the season, beating Housatonic Regional 11-2 on Wednesday night in a Nutmeg Hockey Conference game. Drew Sager (East Lyme) and Luke Cramer (Stonington) had two goals each and Colin Bunkley (East Lyme) and Wade Larson (East Lyme) had a goal and two assists each for the Eagles (1-2).

    Declan York (Ledyard) had a goal and an assist and Cam McCollum (East Lyme) and Tyler Fields (NFA) combined to make 22 saves. Also scoring for the Eagles were Wyatt Verbridge (Stonington), Kaden Casteel (Waterford), Jack Cramer (Stonington) and Dylan Makuchowski (Ledyard).

    Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon) each had two assists and Gavin Casagrande (Fitch), Josh Bertelli (Waterford) and Dakota Fox (East Lyme) each had an assist.

    UConn news

    • The UConn Department of Athletics will host an exclusive ribbon cutting event and grand opening reception for the Toscano Family Ice Forum on January 12 to officially open the new home for the UConn men’s and women’s hockey programs.

    Thursday night’s event, which will run from 6-8 p.m., will kick-off a weekend of Hockey East action and the first games to be played at the new state-of-the-art, on-campus rink.

    The UConn women will host Merrimack on Friday, January 13 at 6 pm. Saturday, January 14 will feature a doubleheader with the women facing Vermont at 2 pm and the men taking on Northeastern at 7:35 pm.

    General admission tickets will be available for the six remaining women’s home games at the Toscano Family Ice Forum this season. Admission will be free through a ticket claim process on UConnTickets.com.

    For the remainder of the 2022-23 men’s home schedule, season ticket holders have been assigned seats at the new arena. Due to the high demand, there will not be tickets available for public sale for the final five home games.
