Local college roundup: Benson’s buzzer-beater leads Mitchell men past JWU

New London — Jalen Benson of New London made a fadeaway buzzer-beater Saturday afternoon to give the Mitchell College men’s basketball team its first win of the new year, with the Mariners edging Johnson & Wales 62-60 at Yarnall Athletic Center.

Jontai Williams made a free throw for Johnson & Wales to tie the score at 60 with 11 seconds left. Benson then took the inbounds pass and dribbled through traffic, initially stopped by the defense before falling backward as he unleashed a shot at the buzzer, being swarmed by teammates as the ball sailed through the net.

Alfonzo Stokes led Mitchell with 17 points and Wilton Causey and Dontae Pollard each had 11. Benson finished with eight points, six rebounds and five steals and Mikey Buscetto of Waterford had five assists for the Mariners (10-2), who were playing their first game since Dec. 12.
