    Local college roundup: Kwafo leads CGA women to team title at Smith-King Invite indoor meet

    Medford, Mass. — Michelle Kwafo won a pair of individual events and was part of a winning relay team to lead Coast Guard Academy to the women’s team championship in the Branwen Smith-King Invite indoor track and field meet at Tufts on Saturday.

    The Bears finished with 189 points and the host Jumbos finished second with 171.

    Kwafo captured the 60-meter hurdles in 9.13 seconds and 60 dash in 7.80 seconds. She also joined Gracy Flynn, Heather Huang and Kelly wade to win the 4x200 relay in 1:49.93.

    Coast Guard also finished first in five other events as Madison Garrigus won the pole vault (11 feet, 3.75 inches), Kalea Salang the weight throw (45-11.25), Maureen Hammond the shot put (36-11.75), Hope Shales the 3,000 (10:37.79) and the 4x800 relay team of Sophie White, Taylor Winters, Sidney Triepke and Paige Phillips (10:06.58).

    In the men’s meet, Coast Guard had 90 points to tie Brandeis for third place (Tufts) won with 235). The Bears had a pair of individual champs with Joshua Banks winning the pole vault (14-3.25) and Ryan Weston winning the mile (4:28.99).

    Men’s basketball

    • Alfonzo Stokes scored a game-high 29 points as Mitchell College cruised to a 78-52 win over New England College in the New England Collegiate Conference. New London’s Jalen Benson added 11 points and four steals for the Mariners (13-3, 2-0) while Bishop Taylor had seven assists.

    • Babson shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half and went on to defeat Coast Guard 79-60 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. Trevor Parks led the Bears (4-13, 2-4) with 12 points and nine rebounds while Declan Rooney added 11 points.

    • Avery Point suffered its eighth straight loss, losing at CCRI 102-57. Jason Cohen scored 17 points to lead the Pointers (1-15) while Elijah Botnick added 15 and Jusitn Porter had 11 points and nine rebounds.

    Women’s basketball

    • East Lyme’s Megan Bauman had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists to help Babson defeat Coast Guard 66-50 in the NEWMAC. Glory Blethen scored 16 points to lead the Bears (8-9, 1-2) while Kira Wood added 14 and Julia Mann 11.

    • CCRI rolled to an 88-50 victory over UConn Avery Point. Adeline Smith had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Pointers (6-8) while Francesca Foster finished with 10 points and five assists and Addie Hauptmann had 11 rebounds.

    Men’s hockey

    • Ryan Tverberg registered a goal and an assist as UConn rallied for a 3-1 win over UMass in a Hockey East game in Storrs. The Huskies (15-7-3, 10-6-2) swept the weekend series, winning 4-3 in overtime on Friday in Amherst. UConn held a 42-17 edge in shots and goalie Logan Terness made 16 saves.

    • Trinity won its seventh straight match with a 2-0 victory over Conn College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Goalie Cam Fernandez made 30 saves for the Camels (2-13, 0-10).

    Women’s hockey

    • Annabelle Merkel’s goal three minutes into overtime gave Trinity a 3-2 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. The Bantams beat Conn in overtime in consecutive days. Rylie Griffith scored both goals for the Camels (8-6, 5-5) and goalie Abby Wieczorek made 28 saves.

    Men’s swimming

    • Conn College won the meet’s final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, to edge Amherst 143-137 in the NESCAC. Sean Geisler, Justin Finkel, Mitchell Lockwood and Juien Egros finished in 1:24.86, less than a second ahead of Amherst. Finkel added wins in the 200 butterfly (1:51.40) and 100 fly (50.38) while Legros captured the 50 free (20.96) and 100 free (47.40), Kai Listgarten won both diving events, Mathew Laclef won the 500 free (4:47.13) and Tadeusz Trezewik-Quinn won the 200 IM (1:56.66).

    Women’s swimming

    • No. 25 Amherst defeated Conn College 166-125 in the NESCAC. Tiernan Shea was a member of two winning relay teams for the Camels and also captured the 100 backstroke (57.85) and 200 backstroke (2:08.13). Sonora Sandoval added a win in the 200 fly (2:16.72) and Sarah Franco captured the 200 IM (2:13.49).
