    High school roundup: Williams leads Whalers to their fifth straight win

    Bridgeport – Sophomore Devan Williams scored 36 points as New London beat Bassick 75-59 in a nonleague boys’ basketball game on Thursday night.

    Da’Shaun Phillips, also a sophomore, had 14 points and freshman Xavier Goode had 12 points for the Whalers (10-2), who have won five straight games.

    In other games:

    • Eshaad Hernandez made a 3-pointer with 45 left in the game to help lead NFA to a 58-56 win over Waterford. Tony Williams had 24 points and Camron Barboza had five steals, the last of which sealed the win NFA (6-7). Logan Peabody scored 18, Juan Morel had 10 points and 11 rebounds, C.J. Landry scored 10 and had eight rebounds and Nate Hynes had five rebounds and five steals for Waterford (5-10).

    Wrestling

    • East Lyme/Norwich Tech recorded seven pins en route to a 51-22 win over Fitch in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I match. Gianno Pearson (113 points), Lukas McKusick (120), Jacques Borja (126), Joseph Morse (152), Brayden Soleau (182), Jackson Hart (195) and Jackson Lin (285) had pins for the Vikings (11-8, 2-1) and Anthony Caisse won by decision at 145.

    Luca Ursini (132) and Shad Stewart (138) had pins for Fitch (4-11, 0-3) and Naszier Matthews won by major decision at 220.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Fitch lost to Valley Regional 68-49 in a nonleague game. Gabby Dimock had 20 points and Mariette El Khoury scored 19 for Fitch (9-5).

    • Old Lyme lost to North Branford 61-40 in a Shoreline Conference game. Ava Roth had 17 points, five steals and six rebounds, Sybil Neary had six points and seven rebounds, Kanon Oharu had nine points, four steals and five rebounds and Abby O’Brien scored eight for Old Lyme (1-12, 1-10).

    • A basket at the buzzer lifted Newington to a 42-40 win over Ledyard in a nonleague game. Adrianna Hardison had 11 points and Maggie Dykes scored 10 for Ledyard (8-7).

    • Plainfield beat Griswold 38-36 in an ECC Division III game. Kierra Nielson had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Abby Matheson scored eight points for Griswold (3-9, 0-4).

    Gymnastics

    • Stonington split an ECC tri-meet, beating Killingly 131.9-130.2 but losing to Woodstock Academy (133.3). Lydia Laskey of Stonington (9-3, 3-1) won the floor exercise (9.55), tied for first on the balance beam (9.3) and was third in all-around at 35.05.

    Mary Lord of Stonington and Laskey tied for fourth in vault (8.5) and Laskey was third in bars (9.0). Olivia Aleman of Woodstock won all-around (37.05) and vault (9.2) and Ella Pereira of Killingly won bars (9.3).
