    Local college roundup: Buscetto sparks Mitchell to victory

    New London — The Mitchell College men’s basketball team stayed unbeaten in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 90-78 win over New England College on Saturday.

    Waterford’s Mikey Buscetto had 22 points seven assists and eight steals to lead the Mariners (17-3, 4-0) on Senior Day. Alfonzo Stokes had 24 points and nine rebounds, New London’s Jalen Benson had 21 points, Ahmani Browne had eight rebounds and Wilton Causey came off the bench for nine points and 11 rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Coast Guard Academy lost to MIT 86-83 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Declan Rooney had 17 points, Mitch Shettles scored 16, Cameron Brown had 14 points and seven rebounds and Trevor Parks had 13 points for the Bears (4-17, 2-8).

    • Avery Point lost to Gateway Community College 114-84. Elijah Botnick had 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Pointers (1-20). Jason Cohen had 28 points, Jose Balseca scored 27 and Groton’s Justin Porter had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Avery Point.

    Women’s basketball

    • Sam McKenna scored 29 points and had seven assists as Mitchell College beat New England College 84-56 to stay unbeaten in the NECC. Yasmine Santos scored 13 points, Amina Wiley had 10 points and seven rebounds and Dede Stevenson scored 10 for the Mariners (12-9, 4-0).

    • Niantic’s Adeline Smith scored 35 points and had 15 rebounds as Avery Point beat Westchester Community College 77-64. Mystic’s Francesca Foster had 14 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds, Waterford’s Jade Redo scored 18 and Adelaide Hauptmann of North Stonington had 15 rebounds for the Pointers (8-10).

    • Coast Guard lost to Smith 86-57 in the NEWMAC. Dorothy Stotts led Coast Guard (11-10, 3-3) with 12 points.

    Wrestling

    • No. 16 Coast Guard finished the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 20-13 win over No. 22 New York University. Chase Randall (133 pounds) and Coy Spooner (197) had major decision wins for the Bears. Coast Guard (9-2) also got wins from Owen Woolcott (141), AJ Pagliarulo (149), Joe Chapman (157) and David McCullough (184).

    Men’s hockey

    • Hudson Schandor scored twice, including the game-winner with 16 seconds left in overtime, to lift UConn past Northeastern, 4-3, in Hockey East game on Friday night. Jake Flynn and Matthew Wood also scored for UConn (17-8-3, 11-6-2), which is ranked 14th in the USCHO.com poll.
