Connecticut Sun sign Anigwe, Cox to training camp contracts

Mohegan — The Connecticut Sun signed a pair of veteran forwards to training camp contracts on Tuesday, general manager Darius Taylor announced.

Kristine Anigwe, who was drafted by the Sun in the 2019 WNBA draft, will join the team for preseason camp along with Lauren Cox, drafted by No. 3 overall in the 2020 draft by the Indiana Fever. Both are 6-foot-4

Anigwe spent her rookie season with Connecticut after going No. 9 overall out of California. She spent time with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2020, the Dallas Wings in 2021 and the Phoenix Mercury in 2022. She is currently played for Ragusa in the Italian League and averaging 17.0 points and 11.1 rebounds per-game.

“Kristine is a veteran post that has played in Connecticut before and has experience in our league,” Taylor said in a release. “She can be a defensive presence and has continued to expand her game.”

Cox, who starred at Baylor, was a reserve player in Indiana during the 2020 and was waived by the Fever in 2021 before joining Los Angeles, where she was waived prior to the start of the 2022 season. Cox is currently playing for Valencia Basket, a premier club in the Spanish League, where she is averaging 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

“Lauren has continued to improve throughout her pro career. Her size, rebounding, shot blocking and improved perimeter shot will be welcomed. We’re looking forward to her arrival to camp,” Taylor said.
