    H.S. roundup: Fitch adds David Hall (baseball) and Aly Clarke (girls’ soccer) to coaching staff

    Groton — Two former Fitch High School athletes are returning to their alma mater to become head coaches, athletic director Marc Romano announced on Monday.

    David Hall, a 2012 Fitch graduate, has been named the Falcons’ new baseball coach while Aly Clarke, a 2015 grauate, will take over the girls’ soccer program.

    Hall replaces Brian McGugan, who announced his resignation last week, while Clarke takes over for Ryan Magee, who left the program following the 2022 season.

    Hall, who went on to play baseball at Plymouth State and was a team captain in 2016, joined McGugan’s coaching staff in 2017 as an assistant. He teaches physical education at Groton Middle School.

    Clarke, the only all-state girls’ soccer player in program history, Romano said, went on to play at Eastern Connecticut State University, where she also served as a team captain in 2018. She joined the ECSU coaching staff as an assistant in 2019 and currently teaches in the Montville Public Schools system.

    Gymnastics

    • Old Lyme freshman Emily Looney swept all four individual events and captured the all-around title during the Shoreline Conference Championship meet. Looney, who was also named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection for the Wildcats, who placed second in the team standings behind Valley Regional.

    Looney won the vault with 9.35 points, the uneven bars with 8.8 points, the balance beam with 9.5 points and the floor exercise with 9.2 points to finish with an all-around total of 36.85. Old Lyme teammate Anna Eichholz added a fourth place finish on bats with 7.3 points.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Sport Sciences of Hartford overcame a tremendous shooting night by Ledyard’s Ethan Petrowski to beat the Colonels 58-49 in a non-conference game. Petrowski scored 23 points for Ledyard (2-16), including seven 3-pointers.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Kylie McCormack scored 18 points as Griswold outlasted St. Bernard win a wild overtime game, 71-66. The Wolverines (7-13) scored the game’s first 17 points before the Saints (11-9) when on a 29-5 run the rest of the first half to open a 29-24 lead. Griswold also scored the final eight points in regulation, including a shot by Abbie Matheson at the buzzer, to force OT. Kierra Neilson added 10 for Griswold while Angelica Tompkins made nine 3-pointers and finished with 44 points to lead the Saints, who also got eight points apiece from Maddy Scribner and Maeve Suprenant.

    • Hailey Flores scored 16 points and Windham went 10-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to overtake Ledyard 57-49 in the regular-season finale for both. The Whippets (12-8) outscored the Colonels 22-13 in the fnial eight minutes. Kieara Kirvan scored 16 points to lead Ledyard (11-9).

    • Emma Diehl scored 15 points as Bolton defeated Lyman Memorial 55-37 in a non-league game. Jenny Lopez had 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Bulldogs (14-6) while Phoebe Carpenter added seven points and nine rebounds and Taylor Pankowski had eight points and six rebounds.

    • Chloe Shafir scored 16 points as Coginchaug defeated Old Lyme 65-33 in the Shoreline Conference. Ava Roth had 11 points, four rebounds and five steals to lead the Wildcats (1-18) while Sybil Neary finished with seven points and seven rebounds and Abby O’Brien had seven points.

    • Hayden Bresnan scored seven points to highlight Wheeler’s 33-19 win over Fishers Island. Marissa Perkins and Abby Butremovic added five points apiece for the Lions (5-12).

    • Forman School defeated Williams School 46-17. Lucy Fader had six points and four blocks shots for the Blues and Amaya Butler scored six points.
