    Local college roundup: Holdridge leads Coast Guard to victory in lacrosse opener

    New London ‐ Waterford’s Caleb Holdridge scored with 3:12 left in overtime as the Coast Guard men’s lacrosse team opened its season with a 12-11 win over No. 17 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.

    Holdridge, a senior, scored three goals. Taylor Gustafson led the Bears with three goals and an assist. Dan Lucas made six saves for Coast Guard.

    Women’s basketball

    • Amina Wiley had 23 points and 14 rebounds as Mitchell College closed out its regular season with a 96-61 win over Eastern Nazarene in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Yasmine Santos had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Dede Stevenson had 17 points and nine assists, Sam McKenna scored 21 and Jermia Dumas had 10 points for the Mariners (16-9, 6-0). Mitchell, which finished league play unbeaten for the first time, will host a semifinal in the NECC tournament Wednesday at 6 p.m.

    • Former Wheeler standout Adelaide Hauptmann scored 17 points, had 31 rebounds and eight assists as Avery Point beat Bristol Community College 93-35. Niantic’s Adeline Smith had 34 points and eight rebounds, Jade Redo of Waterford scored 21, Francesca Foster of Mystic had 10 points, 20 rebounds and 15 assists and Samantha Post of New London had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers (9-12).

    • Coast Guard closed out its regular season with a 75-67 win over Emerson in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Jacqueline Ward had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Kira Wood scored 16, Dorothy Stotts had 14 points, Julia Mann had 12 rebounds and five steals and Glory Blethen scored 10 for the Bears (13-12, 5-5). The No. 6 Bears are at No. 3 MIT in a first round NEWMAC tournament game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    Men’s basketball

    • Mitchell College closed out its regular season with a 96-89 win over Eastern Nazarene in an NECC game. The Mariners (21-4, 6-0) will be the top seed in next week’s NECC tournament. Waterford’s Mikey Buscetto had 18 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, Alfonzo Stokes had 28 points and six assists, Wilton Causey scored 15 and Dontae Pollard had 14 points for Mitchell.

    • No. 7 Conn College gave Hamilton a scare before falling 64-59 in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. No. 2 Hamilton ended the game on a 15-3 run to lock up the win. David Murray led Conn (14-11) with 25 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Elias Espinosa scored 14 for the Camels.

    • Coast Guard ended its season with a 92-65 loss to Springfield in a NEWMAC game. Jarrod Jackson had 20 points, Declan Rooney scored 13, Cameron Brown had 14 rebounds and Elijah Parent scored 11 for Coast Guard (4-21, 2-12).

    Women’s hockey

    • UConn beat Holy Cross 3-0 in a Hockey East game that completed its regular season. Coryn Tormala, Carlie Magier and Kathryn Stockdale had goals and Ava Rinker had two assists for the Huskies (18-12-4, 12-11-4).

    • Conn College lost to Colby 2-1 in a NESCAC game that ended its regular season. Kelly Matthews had a first-period goal and Abby Wieczorek made 21 saves for the Camels (12-11-1, 6-9-1).

    Men’s hockey

    • Conn College closed out its regular season with a 2-0 loss to Bowdoin in a NESCAC game. Kellen Beauton made 38 saves for Conn (5-19, 2-16).

    Baseball

    • Korey Morton and Dominic Freeberger drove in four runs each as UConn beat Ohio State 9-6 in Sarasota, Fla. The Huskies (1-1) lost their opener to 3-0 to Ohio State on Friday night. Morton had a two-run triple and a two-run homer and scored four runs. Freeberger had a two-run homer, RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

    Softball

    • UConn split a pair of games at the T-Mobile tournament, losing to host Florida 4-3 before beating Central Michigan 3-2. Aziah James had two hits and scored twice against Central Michigan. Grace Jenkins was 3-for-3 in the opener for the Huskies (3-4).

    Men’s swimming

    • Conn College is tied for seventh place after the third day of competition at the NESCAC Championships. Justin Finkel won his second event at the meet. After breaking the school record in the 200 free during the morning prelims, he bettered the mark in the finals with a blazing time of 1:37.26.

    Finkel, who also took first place in the 500 free on Friday, becomes just the fourth Conn swimmer—and first since Michael Fothergill in 2017—to claim multiple individual titles in the same year. He also earned All-NESCAC honors on Thursday as a member of the 800 free relay team, which finished third.

    Kai Listgarten was fourth in the 3-meter dive with a score of 425.45 and Tadeusz Trzewik-Quinn was seventh in the 400 IM at 4:05.19.
