    Local roundup: Conn’s Finkel named NESCAC Swimmer of the Year

    Middletown – Connecticut College’s Justin Finkel was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year on Sunday as the Camels finished fifth at the NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at Wesleyan University.

    Finkel picked up his third title at the meet, winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:45.31. Teammate Marc Stern was third in the event at 1:50.51, earning all-NESCAC honors for the second time.

    Finkel, who set meet, pool and school records with his time, also matched the NCAA ‘A’ cut. He becomes just the second Camel to be tabbed NESCAC Swimmer of the Year and the third to win three individual titles in the same season, and the first since Sam Gill in 2014. Finkel’s other wins came in the 200 and 500 free, and he also swam a leg on the 800 free relay squad that finished third.

    Conn’s Matthew Laclef finished fourth in the 1,650 freestyle at 15:49.23. Zahar Tate and Will Nash also placed 12th and 14th in the event, respectively.

    The final Conn swimmer to take part in a championship final on the night was Tadeusz Trzewik-Quinn, who was sixth in the 200 backstroke at 1:49.94.

    Williams College took home the team title with a four-day total of 1,819.5 points. Conn College finished with 875 points.

    College softball

    • Rosie Garcia’s walkoff two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted UConn to a 5-4 win over Bowling Green in the Huskies’ finale at the T-Mobile tournament at Gainesville, Fla. Jana Sanden, Aziah James and Garica had two hits each for UConn (4-4).

    College baseball

    • UConn beat Bowling Green 5-4 at Sarasota, Fla. Ben Huber, Maddix Dalena and Bryan Padilla drove in two runs each for the Huskies (2-1). Jake Studley had two hits and Huber and Dalena homered the UConn.

    H.S. hockey

    • The Eastern CT Eagles lost their sixth straight game, falling to Cheshire 8-5 on Saturday. Drew Sager and Owen Pazzaglia had two goals and an assist each for the Eagles (5-11).

    Gavin Casagrande had a goal and two assists and Zack Pazzaglia, Wade Larson, Dakota Fox and Kaden Castell each had an assist. Cam McCollum and Tyler Fields (25) combined for 33 saves for the Eagles.
