    Around the region

    • Senior Megan Bauman (East Lyme) is heading to the NCAA Division III tournament as a member of the Babson College women’s basketball team. The Beavers (23-5), a regional host, will play Maine Maritime Academy (22-6) in the first round on Friday. Bauman, a starting guard, is averaging 13.9 points, 5.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds.

    • Under the guidance of coach Glen Miller (Fitch), the University of Saint Joseph men’s basketball team has earned the first NCAA tournament at-large berth in Great Northeast Athletic Conference history. The top-ranked Blue Jays (27-1) lost to Albertus Magnus, 83-79, Sunday in the GNAC championship game. They’ll open the Division III tourney at home Friday, hosting Chatham University (17-11) in the first round in West Hartford.

    • Senior Shane Smith (Stonington) won the heptathlon to help Southern Connecticut State University capture its sixth straight Northeast 10 Conference Indoor Championship on Feb. 17. Smith set a conference championship and school record with 4,847 points, winning the shot put, pole vault and 1,000 meters and taking second in the long jump. Junior Cameron Belton (Norwich Free Academy) won the shot put for the second straight year with a personal best throw of 17.53 meters (57 feet, 6 inches).

    • Junior Rhys Hammond (Stonington) posted a time of 4:03.17 to finish second in the mile and help Cornell to a third-place finish at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship last weekend at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

    • Junior Jared Burrows (Waterford) and senior Ken Turner (Ledyard) are on the Bryant University baseball pitching staff. So far, Turner, who battled injuries last season, has started two games, going 0-1 with a 5.87 earned run average. Burrows has yet to make an appearance in the first six games.

    • At Eastern Connecticut State University, Matt Malcom (East Lyme) has started his senior season on a tear for the defending Division III national champions, batting .538 (7 for 13) with three home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored in three games. He was named the Little East Player of the Week.

    • Also at Eastern, senior guard Max Lee (Norwich) scored a season-high 20 points and added nine rebounds in an 83-61 loss to Keene State in the Little East men’s basketball tournament semifinals on Thursday.

    • Junior Abigail Mountain (East Lyme) scored her third goal of the season and added two assists for the Wheaton College women’s lacrosse team in a 15-7 win over Salve Regina on Sunday.

    • Also at Wheaton, junior Abby Rogers (Fitch) ran a leg on the winning 4x200 meter relay team at the Lyon-Mule Dual Meet late last month. The team’s time was one minute, 48.17 seconds. At the NCAA Division III New England Championship last weekend, the quartet posted a season-best time of 1:47.32.

    • Smith College sophomore Serena Britner (St. Bernard) earned All-New England honors while competing on the distance medley relay team in the Division III New England Championships last weekend in Boston. The relay team placed sixth in a school-record time of 12:20.28. Britner also set a personal best of 3:02.87 while placing ninth in the 1,000 meters.

    Taina Pagan (New London), a junior forward, contributed 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds in Post University’s 74-62 win over Felician College on Saturday.

    • Senior Jonathan Russack-Baker (Fitch) won 15 of 26 draws and had a game-high nine ground balls in Western Connecticut State University’s season-opening 12-11 win over Maritime College on Feb. 16.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • The Mitchell College baseball team will open the season with four home games, starting with facing Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, before heading to Florida for its annual trip. Dougie DelaCruz (Montville), Leo Martinez (New London) and 2022 NECC rookie of the year Bo Yaworski (Killingly) headline a talented group of returning players from a team that went 31-13 overall, won the New England Collegiate Conference tournament and qualified for the NCAA tournament. The Mariners were picked to finish first in the NECC preseason poll.

    Camel highlights

    • Connecticut College junior Billy Whelan was selected to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District men’s basketball team while women’s basketball players seniors Molly Cronin and Jaycie Rojik, sophomore Catie Donadio and junior Rebecca Oberman-Levin also were honored. The award honors top student-athletes for performances in the classroom and on the court.

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Coast Guard Academy men’s lacrosse team is off to a 2-0 start, scoring wins over Rensselaer (12-11 OT) and Western New England (9-5). Senior Caleb Holdridge (Waterford) had a team-best five goals.

    • The women’s lacrosse program also is 2-0, with wins over Salve Regina (21-6) and Bridgewater State (19-5). Sophomore Gianna Casio (eight goals, four assists), junior Sarah Skurat (three goals, nine assists) and junior Addy Bass (eight goals) are the team’s top scorers.
