Derry, N.H. — Norwich Free Academy’s Trinity Ambruso had a memorable Saturday during her first appearance in the New England Championship gymnastics meet at Pinkerton Academy.

The freshman captured first place on the balance beam with a score of 9.625 points and earned a bronze medal by finishing third in the all-around competition with 37.45 points.

Her performance came a week after winning the beam (9.6) and placing third in the all-around (37.275) at the State Open.

College wrestling

• Coast Guard Academy’s Coy Spooner finished second in the 197-pound weight class at the NCAA Division III Championship tournament in Ferrum, Va. The top-seeded junior who earned an 11-3 major decision over No. 4 Chibueze Chukwueze of Ithaca in Saturday morning’s semifinals, but lost to No 2 Massoma Endene of Wartburg 10-4 in the championship match..

Two other CGA wrestlers reached the medal stand. David McCullough (184) defeated Sampson Wilkins of Castleton 9-4 in the fifth-place consolation match while Carl DiGiorgio (285) defeated Michael Douglas of Wisconsin-LaCrosse 7-3 in the seventh-place consolation match.

Men’s hockey

• Goalie Gustavs Davis Grigal made 40 saves as fifth-seeded UMass Lowell defeated No. 4 UConn 2-1 in the Hockey East quarterfinals in Storrs. Blake Wells and Owen Cole scored first period goals for UMass Lowell (18-14-3), which advances to next week’s semifinals at TD Garden in Boston, while Nick Capone scored in the third period for the Huskies (20-12-3), who held a 41-17 edge in shots.

Men’s lacrosse

• No. 11 Middlebury outlasted Conn College 10-9 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Jared Rainville had three goals and two assists for the Camels (1-2, 0-1) while Jack Tenzer and Bobby Chang added two goals apiece and goalie Will Rice made 14 saves, including four in the fourth quarter.

Women’s lacrosse

• Middlebury, the top-ranked team in the country, rolled to a 19-3 NESCAC victory over Conn College behind Susan Rowley’s four goals. Julianna Ingrassia, Aine Downey and Kate Coughlin each scored a goal for the Camels (2-1, 0-1) while goalie Violette Nidds made seven saves.

• Daniella Holland had six goals and one assist to lead Mitchell to its first win of the season, a 15-2 victory over Northern Vermont-Lyndon. Lauren Cordero and Jessica Krupnikoff added three goals apiece for the Mariners (1-1) while Hannah Gomes scored twice and Mariah Travisano added a goal. Krupnikoff added a game-high 10 ground balls.

College indoor track

• Coast Guard’s Michelle Kwafo earned All-Amerian honors by placing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Kwafo was timed in a personal best 8.58 seconds. She also competed in the 60 dash, but failed to reach the final.

Conn College’s Matt Carter finished 10th in the 5k on Friday night, finishing in a time of 14:25.15. Teammate Jeffrey Love finished 17th in Saturday’s 3k in 8:27.73.

H.S. indoor track

• Old Lyme’s Dylan Sheehan finished third in the rising stars shot put at the New Balance Nationals in Boston. Sheehan’s best throw was 53 feet, 1 inch. Stonington’s Josh Mooney qualified for Sunday’s semifinals in the championship 60-meter hurdles by finishing second in his heat in 7.80 seconds, and Old Lyme freshman Chase Gilbert finished 11th in the girls’ championship 5k in 17:23.11.

On Friday night, Stonington placed third and East Lyme fourth in the rising stars sprint medley relay. Stonington’s Landon Pelletier, Olivier Cooke, Anders Dahl and Ryan Gruczka won their heat in 3:37.60 with Gruczka running the 800 anchor leg in 1:56.54. East Lyme’s team of Lucas DeNucci, Shawn Henning, Brendan Fant and Kai Ritz finished in 3:37.75.
