    H.S. baseball: Pontbriant helps Lyman Memorial hand Wheeler first ECC Division IV defeat

    North Stonington — Dominic Pontbriant pitched Lyman Memorial to a 7-1 win over Wheeler in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV baseball game on Saturday, handing the Lions their first loss in division play.

    Wheeler (11-4, 3-1) still controls its own destiny. The Lions can wrap up the title with wins over Putnam (Tuesday) and St. Bernard (Thursday). Lyman is done in division play at 4-2 and the Saints are 3-2 with Wheeler remaining.

    Pontbriant struck out 13 with one walk and five hits and 5.2 innings for the win. Jeremiah Bobbi was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Alex Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Lyman. Jon Anderson had two hits for Wheeler.

    Later in the day Lyman (11-6) beat Plainfield 6-1. Ben Darrow (4-3) got the win, pitching a six-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk. Mike Incontro (double) had three hits and drove in two runs, Bobbi had three hits and scored twice and Jacob Citro had a two-run double.

    In other games:

    • Roberto Kiefer had a two-run double as Waterford beat East Lyme 5-1 in an ECC Division I game. Starter Matt Ory and Colby Sheehan combined to pitch a four-hitter for Waterford (10-8, 2-3). Ory got the win, allowing a run and four hits over five innings, and Sheehan pitched two hitless innings. John Bureau and Alex Dreyfus had two hits each for East Lyme (14-3 4-1).

    • Derrel Mitchell pitched a five-hitter as New London beat Ledyard 6-1 in an ECC Division II game. Mitchell struck out nine and allowed an unearned run. Mitchell also hit his sixth home run of the season, Landon Hill was 3-for-3 with a double and scored twice and Darius Aquino had two hits for the Whalers (6-10, 4-2). Cam Weber had a double for Ledyard (1-16, 0-6).

    • Kade Rubino had two hits and stole four bases as Griswold beat Killingly 7-3 in an ECC Division III game. Colin Mitchell (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs over 6.1 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Drew Hardin had an RBI double and Cory Smith drove in two runs for the Wolverines (9-8, 2-3).

    • Colin O’Leary and Martin Light drove in three runs each as St. Bernard beat Putnam 9-3 in an ECC Division IV game. O’Leary had three hits and Light tripled for the Saints (14-2, 3-2). St. Bernard starter Ethan Chavez allowed one hits and no runs over 3.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

    • Jack Treat was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs as Montville beat Stonington 8-3 in an ECC Division III game. Anthony Martin was 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice, Eric Richmond drove in two runs and Cole Terni had two hits for Montville (7-11, 2-4). Finn Eck doubled for Stonington (10-8, 4-3).

    • Josh Ambrose pitched a three-hitter as Bacon Academy beat Norwich Tech 6-2 in a nonleague game. Ambrose had nine strikeouts and one walk and pitched his second straight complete game. Steven Laliberte was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored three runs, Andrew Ferrigno was 3-for-3 with three RBI and A.J. Blanchette had two hits for the Bobcats (10-6), who have won five straight. Zack Shifflett and Antonio Durand drove in runs for Norwich Tech (7-11).

    • Donte Valentine’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Isaac Frank to give Fitch a 3-2 win over Norwich Free Academy in an ECC Division I game on Friday night. Frank, who had three hits, led off the inning with a single and stole second. Valentine added two hits for the Falcons (9-8, 3-2) while Dylan Meyer pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight. NFA is 8-9, 1-4).
