    H.S. roundup: Mitchell leads Whalers past Bacon in baseball

    New London — Derrel Mitchell was 4-for-4 as New London beat Bacon Academy 15-5 in six innings in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II baseball game on Tuesday.

    Mitchell hit his seventh home run of the season, doubled twice, scored twice and drove in four runs. Isaiah Plaza had three hits, scored five times and drove in three runs, Eddie Torres had three hits and scored three runs and Landon Hill, Jorge Rodriguez and Henry Santana each had two hits for the Whalers (7-10, 5-2).

    New London, which had 18 hits, is 7-2 after an 0-8 start.

    James Gumbs had two hits and scored twice and Mason Pingree had a two-run double for Bacon (10-8, 3-4).

    In other games:

    • Wheeler kept its ECC Division IV title hopes alive with a 9-1 win over Putnam. The Lions (12-4, 4-1) can wrap up the title with a win over St. Bernard on Thursday. James Main had two doubles and drove in three runs, Jon Anderson had three hits and scored twice, Bradin Anderson (two RBI) and Wyatt Elliott had two hits each and Kyle Kessler scored twice for Wheeler. Sean Bergel, Main and Kessler combined to pitch a four-hitter.

    • Jack Ballou pitched five strong innings as Fitch beat Old Lyme 2-1 in a nonleague game. Ballou gave up a run and struck out seven and Brady Borysewicz pitched two scoreless innings for a save. Ballou had three hits and Isaiah Anderson had two hits for the Falcons (10-9). Grady Lacourciere had two hits and Casey Hurtgen drove in a run for Old Lyme (14-4).

    • Griswold beat Montville 6-5 in an ECC Divison III game. Jake Duthrie singled, doubled and scored three runs and Cory Smith and Colin Mitchell had two hits each for the Wolverines (10-8, 3-3). Sean Garvin went 6.1 innings for the win and Smith got the last two outs for a save. Cole Terni, Andrew McElwee, Ryley Beyer and Eric Richmond had two hits each for Montville (7-12, 2-5).

    Softball

    • Norwich Tech beat New London 15-3 in five innings. Caity Flynn pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had a single and a triple and scored four runs. Morgan Cook had two hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Warriors (17-2). Nyomi Barboza doubled, tripled and scored twice, Diana Kozerefeski had two hits, Victoria Tirado tripled and Emily Grant scored twice for Norwich Tech.

    • Wheeler scored 11 runs in the third inning and beat Parish Hill 17-5 in five innings. Makayla Delzer was 4-for-4 and drove in two runs, Addie Stanley drove in four runs and Isabella Deledda had three RBI for the Lions (11-6). Keelan Groves (two RBI), Abby Butremovic, Stanley and Deledda had two hits each.

    • St. Bernard’s rally fell short, losing to Woodstock 7-6. The Saints,who trailed 7-0, scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh. Kaitlyn Scribner was 4-for-4 with two RBI, Maddie Scribner doubled twice and drove in two runs and Helena Coury and Alyssa Lazarou had two hits each for the Saints (9-7).

    • Kaleigh Bodak pitched a three-hitter as Haddam-Killingworth beat East Lyme 9-0. Abby Robinson struck out nine for East Lyme (9-9).

    • NFA scored three unearned runs in the fifth to break the game open as the Wildcats defeated East Lyme 7-0 in an ECC Division I game on Monday night. Jillian Dykema and Hailey Smith combined to pitch a two-hitter for the Wildcats (13-5, 4-2) while Aubrey Martin had two triples and Smith, Leah Manke and Melanie Tackling added two hits apiece. Both of Tackling’s hits were doubles. Robinson struck out 11 in a losing effort for the Vikings (0-6 Div. I).

    Boys’ golf

    • Wheeler remained unbeaten in ECC Division IV play with a 7-0 win over Putnam at Stonington Country Club. The Lions (10-1, 4-0) also beat Griswold 7-0. Keiran Boscoe of Wheeler was the medalist with a 35 and teammate Cameron Conway shot a 36. Brady Sadowski (40), Tyler Signor (42) and Gavin Arruda (44) also won their matches for the Lions. Gennaro Lavado led Griswold with a 46.

    • East Lyme remained undefeated in ECC Division I play with a 7-0 win over Fitch at Old Lyme Country Club. The Vikings’ Jack Bucko was the medalist with a 40. Nate Blankenship (41), Tyler Moore (42), Sebby DeCosta (42) and Anthony Bartolotta (45) also won matches for East Lyme (11-2, 5-0). Charlie Bergendahl shot a 46 for Fitch (0-12, 0-6).

    • Grasso Tech beat Prince Tech 188-290 in a Connecticut Technical Conference match at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford. Nathan Sylvestre led Grasso (3-8-1) with a 38.

    • Old Lyme beat Valley Regional 197-198 in a Shoreline Conference match at Black Hall Club. Alex Chrysoulakis and Carter McGlinchey each shot a 46 for the Wildcats. Manu Geronimo, Michael DeFiore and Alex Olsen also contributed to the win.

    • NFA won the medal point 184-186 and edged Woodstock 4-3 in an ECC Division I match. Costa Kapilotis (44) and Max Weston (45) won matches for the Wildcats (8-3, 4-1).
