H.S. baseball: Stonington wins ECC Div. III title on tiebreaker

Griswold — Stonington erupted for 12 runs in the third inning and cruised to a 17-7 win over Griswold on Thursday in a five-inning game that allowed the Bears to win the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III title.

The Bears (11-8 overall) finished with the same division record as Plainfield (5-3), but won the conference tiebreaker. Stonington and Plainfield split their regular-season series and both swept third-place Griswold, but the Bears split with Killingly, which swept the Panthers.

Aaron LoPresto scored for runs for Stonington while Nick Cannella was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, Austen Linicus was 2-for-3 with three runs and Alex DeBerry had a double, three runs and three RBI.

Jake Duthrie was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Wolverines (10-9, 4-4) while Sean Garvie doubled and drove in three runs.

    In other games:

    • The ECC Division IV title will be determined in the upcoming conference tournament after St. Bernard defeated Wheeler 11-0 to create a three-way tie between the Saints, Lions and Lyman Memorial, who all finished the regular season 4-2 in the division.

All three teams were 2-2 against each other and all there swept last-place Putnam, so according to ECC baseball tiebreaking rules, the Division IV champion will come down to who goes furthest in the ECC tournament next week. If all three lose in the quarterfinals, they will be declared tri-champions.

Ryan Ziegler pitched a complete game three-hitter for the Saints (16-2 overall) with eight strikeouits while Ethan Chase had a single, double and triple and Martin Light had there hits. Wheeler is 12-6 overall.

    • Dominic Pontbriant allowed just four hits while striking out seven as Lyman Memorial defeated Windham Tech 13-0 in a nonleague game that lasted only five innings. Nathan Cone had two hits for the Bulldogs (12-6), including a two-run triple, while Alex Ortiz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

    • Connor Doyle had a pair of hits for Norwich Free Academy in an 8-1 loss to Woodstock Academy. The Wildcats finish the regular season 9-11.
