H.S. roundup: Old Lyme beats Coginchaug and reaches semis of Shoreline baseball tourney
Old Lyme – David Evers drove in four runs as second-seeded Old Lyme beat No. 7 Coginchaug 8-5 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference baseball tournament on Monday.
The Wildcats host No. 3 Valley Regional in a semifinal on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Santiago Rodriguez pitched a five-hitter for the win with five strikeouts and also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Grady Lacourciere, Casey Hurtgen (two RBI) and Evers had two hits each for Old Lyme (16-5) and Lacourciere scored twice.
In other games:
• No. 4 Grasso Tech led 6-0 after three innings and held on to beat No. 5 Bullard Havens 6-4in the quarterfinals of the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament.
The Eagles play at No. 1 Wilcox Tech in the semis on Wednesday. Reis Whitfield and Gabriel Castillo had two hits each for Grasso (11-10), Tito Arias doubled and Derek Kennedy was the winning pitcher.
• Lyman Memorial closed out its regular season with an 18-3 win over Parish Hill in five innings. Alex Ortiz had a single, double, triple and drove in five runs and Mike Incontro, Jared Russo and Nate Cone had two hits each for the Bulldogs (13-7). Aiden Zimnock went the first four innings to get the win.
Softball
• Norwich Tech beat Goodwin Tech 23-6 in five innings in the quarterfinals of the CTC tournament. The Warriors host No. 3 Wilcox Tech in a semifinal on Wednesday.
Autumn Hanks was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, five RBI and scored four runs for the Warriors (18-3). Caity Flynn pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the win and doubled twice and drove in two runs. Abby Ulrich had three hits and scored four runs and Khaiyanna Maldonado scored three runs for Norwich Tech.
• Emma Bayor pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts as No. 2 Old Lyme beat No. 7 East Hampton 9-0 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament. The Wildcats (19-2) host No. 3 Haddam-Killingworth in the semifinals on Tuesday. Jamie Bucior hit a three-run homer, Erin Durant drove in two runs and Sybil Neary, Anna Eichholz and Ava Roth had two hits each.
• St. Bernard beat Putnam 19-0 in five innings as Kaitlyn Scribner and Anabelle Wenzel combined to pitch a one-hitter. Helena Coury (two RBI), Olivia Kane (three RBI) and Wenzel (three RBI) had two hits each for the Saints (11-8, 6-2 ECC Div. IV).
• Madi Allard was 4-for-5 and drove in four runs as Stonington beat Old Saybrook 24-2 in five innings. Lindsey Houle pitched a two-hitter for the Bears (15-5), Bri Plew was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and scored three runs, Cami Brown had two hits and Allard had a double and scored four runs for Stonington.
Volleyball
• NFA beat Putnam 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Connecticut Volleyball League tournament. NFA (14-6) won 25-15, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17. Gage Hinkley had 12 kills and six aces, Evan Keith had six kills and three blocks, Paul Ericson had 22 assists and seven digs and Keegan Johnston had six kills and six digs for NFA.
Boys’ golf
• Grasso Tech beat O’Brien Tech 199-231 in a CTC match at Orange Hills CC in Orange. Nathan Sylvestre of Grasso (4-9-1) was the medalist.
• Wheeler beat Valley Regional 170-185 in a nonleague match at Black Hall Club. Gavin Arruda of Wheeler and Tyler Ruel tied with medalist honors with 40s. Tyler Signor (42), Keiran Boscoe (44), Brady Sadowski (44) and Cameron Conway (47) also scored for Wheeler (13-1).
• Old Saybrook beat Waterford 152 -200 in a nonleague match at Fenwich Golf Course. Drew Kulmann of Old Saybrook was the medalist with a 1-under-par 34. Jacob Beardsley led Waterford (3-11) with a 42.
• Killingly beat Fitch 6.5-0.5. Gianni Drab of Fitch (0-13) halved his match at 43. Ethan Lackner of Killingly was the medalist with an even-par 36.
Girls’ golf
• Woodstock beat Stonington 222-233 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference match. Taya Kelly led Stonington (4-4) with a 55 and Woodstock’s Maya Orbegozo was the medalist with a 49.
