    Local roundup: NFA’s Graham wins shot put, discus at Class LL track and field championships

    New Britain — Norwich Free Academy’s Hannah Graham won state titles in two throwing events during Wednesday’s CIAC Class LL girls’ track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

    The junior captured the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, one-half inch and earned gold in the discus with a winning throw of 124-4.

    The Wildcats also picked up a 1-2 finish from Alexis Boyer (10-6) and Lily Gilbert (10-0) in the pole vault to tie Ridgefield for fifth in the team standings with 44 points. Conard won the titel with 85.

    NFA also added sixths in two relays with Karina Chan, Sofia Ayer, Riley Davis and Gilbert finishing the 4x400 in 4:13.79, and the 4x800 team of Alyssa Newson, Daisy Jeffs, Ayer and Anna Ricketts finishing in 10:09.58.

    In the boys’ meet, sophomore Chris Amy won the discus (149 feet) and placed third in the shot put (46-10) as NFA finished ninth with 31.5 points (Hall won with 134.50). Mason Holt added a sixth in the discus (133-3) and seventh in the shot put (44-1.5) for the Wildcats while DeAndre Ducael was fourth in the shot (46-7), Joal Barros tied for seventh in the high jump (5-8), Jesse Croteau was eighth in the 800 (2:01.67) and the 4x800 relay team of Patrick Croughwell, Sawyer Barile, Nicholas DeBartolo and Ashton Croteau was fifth (8:13.29).

    Class L boys’ track and field

    • Fitch placed 11th at the Class L meet with 29 points (Xavier won the team title with 116). The Falcons’ top finish came in the 4x100 relay as Charlie Tarbox, Oakley Garrison, Nimyel Gamboa and Adonis Fine wound up third in 43.04 seconds.

    Fitch also picked up fourth-place finishes from Derek Osborne in the pole vault (12 feet), Charles Cabusao in the 400 (51.22) and Gianni Colebut in the high jump (5-8) while Zayshawn Griffin (long jump, 20-8), Ryan Dunning (1,600, 4:25.35) and Fine (200, 23.01) added sixths and Fine was eighth in the 100 dash (11.47).

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Cam Elenteny scored three goals, including the game-winner with one second left, as No. 7 Stonington defeated No. 10 Haddam-Killingworth 12-11 in the first round of the Class tournament. The Bears (17-2) will play at No. 2 Weston in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 3 p.m.

    Elenteny also had an assist for Stonington while Nathan Mahoney had three goals and two assists, Tyler Simao two goals and one assist, Ethan Mahoney two goals, Maclan Griscom one and Will French had a goal, an assist and won 18 of 23 faceoffs.

    • No. 3 New Fairfield defeated No. 14 Bacon Academy 16-4 in the Class S. Ethan LoVetere scored two goals for the Bobcats, who finish 11-7, while Jack Holmes had two assists, Avatar Disher and Brayden Ward each scored a goal and goalie Chase Goulet made 15 saves.

    • No. 7 Farmington outlasted No. 10 East Lyme 17-13 in Class M. Drew Sager had three goals and an assist for the Vikings, who finish 10-9, while Jack Campbell and Jack Keating each scored three goals, Gavin White had two goals and three assists, Sawyer Tighe a goal and three assists and Aiden Patterson one goal.

    H.S. softball

    • Melina Graziano went 3-for-3 with a double, walk and five RBI as fifth-seeded NFA pulled off a wild 8-7 victory over No. 12 West Haven in the second round of the Class LL tournament.

    The Wildcats (17-6) will play at No. 4 Ridgefield in on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Ridgefield defeated No. 20 New Canaan 5-1 in the second round.

    Aubrey Martin added a single, double two walks and two runs for NFA while Jillian Dykema had a hit and two runs, Emma McAvoy a hit and two runs and pitcher Hailey Smith worked six innings to earn victory.

    • Julia Bacoulis pitched a three-hitter to lift No. 4 Masuk to a 7-0 win over No. 13 Waterford in the Class L second round. Bacoulis walked four and struck out four and also had two hits with a pair of RBI. Melanie Martin, Ava Majeski and Lyra DeAngelis each had a single for the Lancers, who finish 16-8.

    • Fifth-seeded Norwich Tech’s season ended with an 11-5 loss to No. 21 Canton in the Class S second round. Khai Maldonado and Autumn Hanks each had a double and run scored for the Warriors, who finish 19-5, while Caity Flynn had a single and scored a run.

    H.S. boys’ volleyball

    • No. 8 Enfield defeated No. 9 NFA 25-9, 28-26 and 25-15 in a Division I first-round game. Gage Hinkley had eight kills and two blocks for the Wildcats, who finish 14-8, while Paul Ericson had 16 assists, three blocks, three kills and six digs and Jhon Lopez Choc had 11 digs and one ace.

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College senior Dougie DelaCruz named to the D3baseball.com All-America second team, the first time in program history a Mitchell player has earned All-American honors twice (he also also selected in 2021). The outfielder from Montville hit .430 with 24 doubles, 60 RBI, seven home runs and six triples while striking out only 18 times in 165 at bats. He also had 20-game hitting streak and set the Mariners’ career home run record (24).

    College football

    • UConn has announced starting times for five home football games which will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The season opener against North Carolina State on Thursday, Aug. 31, will start at 7:30 p.m., followed by four Saturday games at Rentschler Field: Florida International (Sept. 16, 3:30 p.m.), Duke (Sept. 23, 3:30 p.m.), Utah State (Sept. 30, noon) and South Florida (Oct. 21, 3:30 p.m.). A time for the Huskies’ final home game (Nov. 18) against Sacred Heart is still to be determined. In addition, UConn’s Sept. 9 road game at Georgia State will start at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Connecticut College’s Jared Rainville will participate in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association East-West Senior All-Star Game on Friday at 7 p.m. Johnson & Wales University. Players from all three divisions will be involved and Rainville will play for the West team. Rainville led the Camels with 32 goals and 26 assists.
