    H.S. roundup: NL’s Arnold wins long jump and anchors 4x100 relay to Class MM state title

    New Britain — New London’s Darielys Arnold struck gold in two events during Thursday’s CIAC Class MM girls’ track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

    The sophomore captured the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 3.75 inches and joined teammates Kmara Royster, Tatiana Pemberton and Leilani Robinson to anchor the 4x100-meter relay to a state title in 49.87 seconds. Arnold also finished fourth in the 100 dash in 12.50 seconds.

    Ledyard also produced a state championship relay team with Samantha Doran, Josephine Withbroe, Ella Stephenson and Kate Littler teaming up to win the 4x800 relay in 9:58.06. Stephenson and Little also joined Margaret Dykes and Megan Armstrong to place third in the 4x400 relay (4:11.29).

    Littler also had a second-place finish in the 800 (2:19.71) while teammate Linda Holeman was runnerup in the javelin (11-9), and East Lyme’s Lauren Hinckley (34-2.75) and Sophia Seguin (34-2) went 2-3 in the triple jump.

    Hand won the team title, edging Hillhouse 64-61, while Ledyard finished fifth with 42 points.

    H.S. boys’ track and field

    • East Lyme had a pair of state champions at the Class MM meet as Sean McCauley captured the 3,200 (9:31.26) and Thomas Matlock won the shot put (53-10) while adding a fourth in the discus (141-5).

    The Vikings also finished second in the 4x800 relay with Kai Ritz, Jilali Benjdid, Finian Gates and Brendan Fant finishing in 8:03.31, while New London’s SaVahn Warren won silver in the triple jump with a leap of 43-2.75.

    Windsor was cruised to the team title with 98 points while East Lyme finished fourth with 55.

    • Fitch placed 11th at the Class L meet on Wednesday night with 29 points (Xavier won the team title with 116). The Falcons’ top finish came in the 4x100 relay as Charlie Tarbox, Oakley Garrison, Nimyel Gamboa and Adonis Fine wound up third in 43.04 seconds. Fitch also picked up fourth-place finishes from Derek Osborne in the pole vault (12 feet), Charles Cabusao in the 400 (51.22) and Gianni Colebut in the high jump (5-8).

    H.S. softball

    Third-seeded Old Lyme’s season came to an end with a 10-7 loss to No. 14 Notre Dame of Fairfield in the Class S second round on Wednesday. The Wildcats, who finish 19-3, were plagued by errors as only one of the 10 runs was earned. Losing pitcher Emma Bayor struck allowed six hits and struck out eight, including the 500th of her career in just 275 innings. Ava Roth went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Old Lyme while Jamie Bucior hit a two-run home in the first inning along with a double and drove in three runs, and Erin Durant had a base hit and scored a run.
