    Local roundup: Mooney adds New England title in 110 hurdles

    Bangor, Maine — Stonington senior Josh Mooney captured the 110-meter high hurdles and placed second in the javelin during Saturday’s New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championships at Cameron Stadium.

    Mooney, who won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and javelin in Monday’s CIAC State Open, did not compete in the 300 hurdles. he won the 110 hurdles in 13.72 seconds and earned a silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 182 feet,10 inches.

    His time in the 110 hurdles was a New England meet record, breaking the old mark of 13.90 set in 1995.

    He is expected to defend his title in the CIAC decathlon on Tuesday and Wednesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, the final appearance of his storied career with the Bears before enrolling at UConn this fall.

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference produced one other New England champion with Killingly’s Noah Colangelo capturing the 300 hurdles in 38.54 seconds.

    Five other local athletes and two relay teams also garnered All-New England status with top six finishes.

    Waterford senior Evan Piotrowski finished third in the boys’ 400 (49.07), Old Lyme senior Dylan Sheehan was fourth in the boys’ discus (170-9), Old Lyme freshman Chase Gilbert was fourth in the girls’ 3,200 (10:52.75), Montville freshman Kamryn Plikus tied for fifth in the girls’ pole vault (10-9) and East Lyme sophomore Thomas Matlock finished sixth in the boys’ shot put (54-4.25).

    The two All-New England relay performances came in the 4x800 with East Lyme’s Kait Ritz, Jilali Benjdid, Finian Gates and Brendan Fant placing fourth in the boys’ race (8:00.32) and Old Lyme’s Maddie Morgado, Liv Powers, Kathleen Walsh and Gilbert finishing sixth in the girls’ race (9:42.56.)

    Other local boys’ competitors included East Lyme sophomore Sean McCauley in the 3,200 (7th, 9:28.97) and Norwich Free Academy sophomore Chris Amy in the discus (13th, 146-9), while girls’ competitors were St. Bernard senior Payton Lowe (8th, 118-1) and NFA junior Hannah Graham (11th, 113-2) in the discus and NFA senior Alexis Boyer (14th, 10-3) and junior Lily Gilbert (15th, 9-9) in the pole vault.

    • Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) had the Mystic Schooners’ lone hit in a 3-0 loss to tne Newport Gulls in a New England Collegiate Baseball League matinee at Dodd Stadium. The Schooners are 2-3.

    Less than 24 hours earlier Mystic defeated the Bristol Blues 1-0 despite having only one hit. That came in the eighth inning when Bobby Marsh (Penn State) had a leadoff double and scored one out later on Kopack’s sacrifice fly. Ex-Wheeler star Bowen Baker (Fairfield) started for the Schooners and allowed only two hits with no walks and six strikeouts over four innings.
