    Local roundup: Sun’s Thomas named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week

    Mohegan — Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas was named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.

    Thomas has now been selected for the weekly award eight times in her 10-year career and the second time this season

    Thomas led Connecticut to a 3-0 record during the week of June 19-25, averaging 14.0 points, 11.7 rebouinds. 8.7 assists and 2 steals per game. She also recorded a pair of triple-doubles to break the WNBA all-time regular season record with four.

    Thomas finished with 13 ponts, 15 rebounds and 12 assists in an 85-79 win over Seattle on June 20, then had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in the Sun’s 96-72 victory over Chicago on Sunday.

    She also became the franchise leader in rebounds (1,822) in Sunday’s game, passing Taj McWilliams-Franklin who had held the record for 17 years (1,814).

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns scored five runs in the third inning and cruised to a 6-1 win over the Pittsfield Suns in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game at Dodd Stadium. Clark Gilmore (Dartmouth) struck out seven over five solid innings to earn the win for the Sea Unicorns (17-11) while Waterford’s Payton Sutman (Holy Cross) pitched two perfect innings to end the game with three strikeouts. Brennan Hyde (Nichols) had two hits and three RBI for Norwich while Andrew Bianco (New Haven) and two hits and drove in a run.

    • The Ocean State Waves broke open a tight game with three runs in the sixth and defeated the Mystic Schooners 6-2 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Anthony DePino (Rhode Island) drove in both runs for the Schooners (10-7) with a sacrifice fly and base hit and Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) scored both runs for Mystic.

    • Andrew Fogarty and Shawn Nadeau combined to pitch a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks as the Padres defeated the Sonics 2-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Major League game at Bidwell Field in Groton on Monday night. Ken Miller had a single and double for the Padres while Bryce Bedard and Jeremy Sagun each drove in a run. Richard Cochrane had two hits for the Sonics.

    District 10 LL softball (10-12)

    • Montville defeated Ledyard 15-5 in four innings on Sunday night as winning pitcher Isabella Kobyluck struck out eight and had a hit. Harper Hedrick went 3-for-3 with three RBI for Montville and Ayanaliz Cruz had a triple and drove in four runs. Camilla Lesage was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ava Helme had an RBI triple for Ledyard.

    • East Lyme/Salem defeated Lyme-Old Lyme/New London 6-5 on Sunday as Kennah Perkins had two hits, including a game-winning triple, anmd Mikaela Richter and Peyton Swanson combined to pitch a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Mia Stokes had 15 strikeouts for Lyme-Old Lyme/New London.

    District 10 LL softball (8-10)

    • Groton/Mystic defeated Montville 12-5 on Monday night as Amelia Amar had two hits and four RBI and Kenzie Beeney had two hits and three RBI. Taylor Sheriff had a hit and two RBI for Montville.

    • East Lyme/Salem defeated Lyme-Old Lyme/NewLondon 9-5 on Monday as Bea Aldana pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts. Lilah Chantrell led the offense with two hits and three runs while Olivia Wlodarczyk had a double and two RBI.
