Local roundup: Sea Unicorns have 10 players named to FCBL All-Star Game

The Norwich Sea Unicorns will be represented by 10 players, the most of any team, in Tuesday’s Futures Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont.

The Sea Unicorns (32-17), who beaten 6-1 by the Pittsfield Suns on Thursday night at Dodd Stadium, had nine players named to Team Lake and one player — infielder Johnny Knox (Nichols) — named to Team Mountain.

Norwich players on Team Lake include infield Dean Ferrara (Fairfield), who leads the FCBL in hitting with a .442 average. He will be joined by fellow infielders Andrew Bianco (Seton Hall) and Jackson Ferrigno (North Alabama), outfielders Brennan Hyde (Nichols) and D.J. Perron (Rhode Island), catcher Joey DeMucci (Montmouth) and pitchers Chris Jenkins (Endicott), Brad Lewis (Bryant) and Matt Wooten (Eastern Connecticut).

    Men’s college basketball

    • Mitchell College was a recipient of the Team Academic Excellence Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, while three players — Ahmani Browne, Samuel Jackson and Dontae Pollard — were named to the NABC Honors Court.

It marked the third time the program received the national honor while Brown and Jackson were honored for the second time and Pollard for the first time.

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men’s basketball programs that completed the 2022-23 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men’s basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

The Mariners had success on the court, too, finishing 23-5 overall (the most single-season wins in the program’s Division III history) while earning their second straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.
