    Local colleges: Armentrout lifts Coast Guard football to 36-14 win over MIT in NEWMAC

    New London — Quarterback Joey Armentrout was 29-for-46 passing for 371 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown in the Coast Guard Academy football team’s 36-14 Parents Weekend win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    Broock Desta added 14 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown for the Bears (3-2 overall, 1-1 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference). Coast Guard led 20-14 with 12 minutes, 7 seconds remaining but scored the final 16 points.

    MIT’s Brady Klein scored on a 1-yard run and Nico Bulhof’s kick pulled the Engineers within 20-14 at the start of the fourth quarter.

    Coast Guard responded with a 63-yard drive, capped by Armentrout’s 1-yard run. With 2:42 to play, the Bears earned a safety, then capped the scoring at the 44-second mark on a 2-yard touchdown run by Glenn Perkins.

    Kicker Brennan Holt had field goals of 20 and 28 yards and was 4-for-4 on extra points.

    James Wheeler IV led Coast Guard’s rushing attack with 18 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown and defensive back Jonathan Clifford had eight tackles, three pass breakups and a blocked field goal.

    MIT fell to 1-3, 0-2.

    Women’s cross country

    • Coast Guard won the College White Division of the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. The Bears finished with 104 points to edge Rochester Institute of Technology by three points. Paige Phillips finished third in 22:18.1 over the 6K course and Claire Semerod was just behind in fourth (22:18.8) while Sophia White was 11th (22:55), Riley Thorburn 36th (23:48) and Maddy Foht 53rd (24:09).

    Connecticut College competed in the Brown Division and finished 19th with 482 points. Abigail Fernald led the Camels, placing 31st in 22:30.8 over 6K. She was followed by Lauren Hino (97th), Edin Sisson (114th), Grace McDonough (116th) and Abigal Williams (138th).

    Men’s cross country

    • Conn College finished 32nd with 862 points while competing in the Brown Division of the Paul Short Invite at Lehigh. Brendan Mellitt finished in 72nd over the 8K course in 26:00 while Chris Davis was 167th, Harry Harwood was 203rd, Ellis Iurilli-Hough was 212th and Robert DiNatale was 242nd.

    Men’s soccer

    • Jack Marvel’s goal with 15:45 remaining lifted Conn College to a 3-2 win over Hamilton College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Elliot Spatz assisted for the Camels (6-0-2, 2-0-2). Maurice Pigola and Matt Scoffone also scored goals for Conn while goalie Peter Silvester made four saves. Hamilton is 3-4-2, 1-4-1.

    • Coast Guard and Springfield played to a scoreless NEWMAC draw. Goalie Wolfgang Pfleghar made three saves for the Bears (1-3-4, 0-1-2), all in the second half.

    Women’s soccer

    • No. 21 Hamilton remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. Erin Rayhill scored in the 11th minute for Hamilton (5-0-3, 3-0-3). Goalie Sarah Hall made five saves for the Camels (4-4, 0-4), who held a 20-12 edge in shots.

    Volleyball

    • Coast Guard cruised to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-14 win over WPI in the NEWMAC. Shannon Shaw led the Bears (12-4, 2-2) with nine kills while Sarah Somer had three blocks, Kaela France 17 digs and Maeve Duffin four aces and 17 assists.

    • Conn had its five-game win streak come to an end against Amherst, falling 25-18, 25-15 and 25-17. Coming off an emotional five-set win over Williams on Friday night, Conn dropped to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in NESCAC play. Katherine Randall finished with 10 kills and 10 digs for the Camels, while Zoe Watts added six kills. Amherst is 5-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.

    In the 3-2 win over previously unbeaten Williams, Conn trailed 2-1 before winning the final two games 25-16 and 15-9. Randall had 17 kills, nine digs and four blocks while Watts had 11 kills, and six blocks and Emma Wheeler had 11 kills.

    Field hockey

    • Lilly Truchon scored a pair of goals as No. 22 Hamilton rolled to a 4-1 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. Bridget McGann scored for the Camels (2-5, 0-4), her second of the season, and goalie Liz Winemaster made six saves.
