East Lyme boys’ soccer remains unbeaten, untied, unscored upon after toppling Woodstock

East Lyme — A few minutes remained in the game Tuesday that would send East Lyme High to its seventh straight win, keeping the Vikings unbeaten, untied and unscored upon in the boys’ soccer season.

It was here that senior A.J. Montejano came off the field after his night’s work, a night in which he scored — and his brother Max did, too. All of which should have created more feel good vibes in a feel good season.

Instead, Montejano kept muttering the word “unacceptable.”

“This year,” Montejano said, after his team’s 3-0 Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I win over Woodstock Academy, “we are holding ourselves to a higher standard. We try to come out with intensity, but sometimes I don’t feel like we play as hard as we should. Next game, we need to be stronger.”

East Lyme coach Paul Christensen, who won career game No. 391, is perfectly fine with the idea that success begets expectations.

“A.J. is right,” said Christensen, whose Vikings are ranked ninth in the latest Class LL/L state coaches’ poll. “And I appreciate that feeling. This wasn’t our best game, although I think their goalie (Mike Susi, the son of former East Lyme principal Mike Susi) played really well. But after Saturday (a win over Stonington) when we were firing on all cylinders, tonight, we really didn’t have it.”

A.J. Montejano and Rob Stoddard (penalty kick) gave the Vikings (7-0, 3-0) a 2-0 lead at halftime. Max Montejano, a sophomore, made it 3-0 in the second half. It was more than enough for keeper Oliver Lopez, who was pinch hitting for starter Ben Johnson (illness).

Lopez kept the shutout streak alive.

“This is unheard of,” Christensen said. “The best we ever had in goals against one year was seven. Right now, Ben and Ollie have been very good and our defense, especially Tristan Seguin, who has been a stalwart back there, has been tremendous.”

Christensen, now nine wins short of 400, might hit the milestone as early as late in this regular season. Lots of numbers for the Vikings to consider at the moment.

“We’re not going to let records or numbers get to us,” A.J. Montejano said. “Just play the way we play. If we do that, we’ll be fine.”
