    Local roundup: East Lyme boys beat NFA 3-1 and clinch ECC Division I soccer crown

    East Lyme — Robert Stoddard scored a pair of goals as No. 4 East Lyme clinched the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I boys’ soccer championship with a 3-1 win over Norwich Free Academy on Wednesday night.

    Luke Salan also scored for the Vikings (13-0, 5-0), Ryan Wargo and Tristan Seguin had assists and goalie Ben Johnson made dive saves.

    John Lopez Choc, assisted by Louis Hawkins, scored for NFA (8-5-1, 3-2), only the second goal allowed by East Lyme this season, and goalie Kolton Hawkins made eight saves.

    In other matches:

    • Peyton Luther had three goals and one assist while Sebby Fieldsend had a goal and three assists to highlight Ledyard’s 6-1 non-league win over Old Lyme. Luther now has 31 goals to become only the second player in school history to break 30 in a season (Nick Washington had 38 in 2021). Tyler Farris added a goal and an assist for the Colonels (12-1) while Niko Cayangyang scored a goal and Sean Harren had an assist. Lucas DaSilva scored for the Wildcats (4-9-1).

    • Stonington scored two goals in the final seven minutes to rally past Bacon Academy 2-1 in an ECC Division II match. Trailing 1-0, Jace Wolfradt’s goal tied it for the Bears (9-5, 4-2) in the 73rd minute and Sal Alessio converted a penalty kick three minutes later to complete Stonington’s comeback. Mike Kennedy assisted onf Wolfradt’s goal. Eddie Hageman scored for the Bobcats (5-7-1, 2-3), who were outshot 10-4.

    • Norwich Tech remained unbeaten in the Connecticut Technical Conference with a 3-0 victory over Cheney Tech. Hunter Jackson, Jadiel Marinez and Emerson Avery each scored a goal for the Warriors (10-1-2, 7-0-1) while Michael George and Cameron Maskaly added assists.

    • Jack Dowrey scored two goals in the first 1:19 as Wheeler rolled to a 6-0 victory over Plainfield in an ECC Division IV match. Wyatt Hayes led the Lions (9-4, 6-1) with three goals while Kieran Boscoe added one goal and one assist, Will Raggon had two assists, Brodey Pappas, Harrison Avery and David Levanto each had an assist and goalie Jon Anderson made two saves for his fourth shutout.

    • Tate Gordon scored a pair of goals as Fitch defeated Woodstock Academy 3-1 in an ECC Division I match. Felipe Dantas added a goal and an assist for the Falcons (2-8-2, 1-3) while David Haugeto and Kyren Potenciano each had an assist and goalie Nate Virtue made nine saves.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Alina Skrabacz had three goals and two assists to highlight New London’s 8-0 victory over Amistad. Christine Forestal added two goals for the Whalers (2-10) while Italia Salls had one goal and two assists, Nini Tucker had one goal and one assist, Darielys Arnold scored a goal and Joy Schneider and Griselle Gordillo each had an assist.

    • Danielle Sands scored two goals as Grasso Tech beat Bullard-Havens 5-0 in a CTC match on Tuesday night. Natalie Smith, Kylee Morrison and Sanaa Jackson each added a goal for the Eagles.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Bella Diep had eight digs and 38 assists as East Lyme defeated Bacon Academy 25-17, 25-10 and 25-12. Skylar Bell added six aces and 12 digs for the Vikings (14-2) while Taylor Kasynski had six kills and 13 digs and Addison Soleau 13 kills. Kiera Stewart had 19 assists and Sammi D’Atri 15 digs for Bacon (7-9).

    • Montville won its 11th straight match with a 25-14, 28-30, 25-18 and 25-19 win over Plainfield. Mackenzie Payne had 28 assists and three aces for the Wolves (14-2) while Zoie Farrar had 10 kills and five digs and Alyna Ovalles added 26 digs.

    • Griswold made quick work of Jonathan Law 25-18, 25-11 and 25-17 in a non-league match. Gretta Dombkowski had eight kills and 13 digs for the Wolverines (10-6) while Abby Matheson added 15 kills and 29 digs, Kierra Neilson had seven kills, four blocks, four aces and 29 digs, and Olivia Gasparino had five kills.

    • Waterford pulled out a 3-2 win over Woodstock. Game scores were 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-9. Danica Agsalud had 41 assists and 12 digs for the Lancers (14-2) while Emerson Lane finished with 15 kills, five aces, five digs and three blocks, Ava Majeski had 15 digs and three aces and Jennifer Macca-Barnes had 17 kills and 14 digs.

    • Valley Regional defeated Old Lyme 25-16, 25-20 and 25-15 in the Shoreline Conference. Peighton Andrews had seven kills and six aces for the Wildcats (8-9, 7-8) and Grace Phaneuf added 18 assists and eight digs.

    • Abby Ulrich had five kills and five aces during Norwich Tech’s 25-15, 26-24 and 26-24 win over Vinal Tech in the CTC. Victoria Tirado added seven kills and Rose Johnny 10 aces for the Warriors (6-9, 6-4).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Westbrook/Old Lyme scored two goals in the first quarter on the way to a 3-0 non-league win over Newington. Lotta Kuenning finished with one goal and one assist for W/OL (5-4-2) while Brooke Ouellette and Bella Ziegler each scored a goal, Meg Bache had an assist and goalies Grace Vincent and Abby Demers combined for three saves.

    H.S. swimming

    • Ledyard/St. Bernard won its first ECC meet of the season with an 85-84 victory over NFA on Tuesday night. Anna Kate O’Donnell won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Colonels (2-7, 1-6) while Seido Schiron won the 50 free, Cate McKenzie the 100 free and Thelma Grogan the 100 breaststroke. Natalie Bezanson won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly for the Wildcats (1-6, 1-6) and Sawyer Levine captured the 500 free.

    College football

    • UConn redshirt senior Christian Haynes was named to the Associated Press Mid-season All-American team as a second-team offensive guard. Haynes was named to the 2022 AP and The Sporting News All-American teams, on they third UConn player in the FBS era to earn All-America status. He has started 43 straight games for the Huskies and anchors an offensive line that ranks 22nd in the nation in sacks allowed, allowing just eight in six games (1.33 per game).

    Women’s basketball

    • UConn juniors Caroline Ducharme and Azzi Fudd were selected to the 20-player watch list for the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award, an annual award that recognizes the top small forwards in Division I. Fudd averaged 15.0 pointers per-game last season while Ducharme, despite missing time due to injury, averaged 7.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

    College field hockey

    • Conn College scored three goals during a nine-minute stretch in the second half to beat Rogers Williams 3-2. Sydney Cresta had a goal and two assists for the Camels (5-8) while Bridget McGann and Rowan Galanis each added a goal and goalie Liz Winemaster made four saves.

    Women’s volleyball

    • Coast Guard defeated Salve Regina 25-12, 25-19 and 25-18 in a NEWMAC match on Tuesday night. Shannon Shaw had 15 kills and Allie Wildsmith and Sophia Galdamez added nine apiece for the Bears (15-6, 5-3) while Maeve Duffin had 28 assists and Kaela France had 22 digs.
