    Local roundup: Conn College men’s soccer falls in NESCAC semis, suffering its first loss

    Middlebury, Vt.— The third-seeded Connecticut College men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 2 Amherst College 2-1 Saturday in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinals.

    Amherst (12-2-3) advanced to Sunday’s championship game to meet No. 4 Tufts. Conn, 11-1-5, will wait for the NCAA Division III selection show, which will take place Monday at 2 p.m.

    Amherst started quickly, forcing a save from Conn goalkeeper Peter Silvester just 30 seconds in, earning an early corner kick. Shortly thereafter, the Mammoths struck first on a goal from Simon Kalinauskas at 1:08.

    Amherst doubled the lead just four minutes later, on a score from Ben Clark-Eden, with Conn cutting into the lead with a goal at 9:56 from Jack Kelesoglu, completing a frantic opening 10 minutes.

    With just over seven minutes remaining, Amherst’s Ada Okorogheye was awarded a penalty kick, but Conn’s Silvester read it all the way, keeping the deficit at 2-1. With time running down, the Camels responded with with five shots in the span of 35 seconds, but could not find the equalizer as time ran out.

    College football

    • The Coast Guard Academy defense made a pair of stops late in the fourth quarter to hold off WPI 28-21 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game in Worcester.

    Trailing by a touchdown, WPI drove to the Coast Guard 13 with 2:45 remaining before turning the ball over on downs. WPI’s final drive ended with 1:15 to play when Coast Guard’s Tyler Jones sacked quarterback Terrence Benedi on fourth-and-6 at the Coast Guard 43.

    Joey Armentrout was 21-for-36 passing for 286 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for Coast Guard (5-4, 3-3), throwing a pair of touchdowns to Broock Desta and one to James Patz. Desta had nine catches for 114 yards, including first-half touchdown receptions of 9 and 34 yards.

    Coast Guard led 28-0 before a comeback for WPI (3-6, 1-5), which pulled within a touchdown when Hunter Carey scored on a 1-yard run with 14:30 to play.

    Logan Morris finished with seven tackles for Coast Guard and Jones had two sacks.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Meg Bache scored a first-quarter goal assisted by Alyssa Leandri to lift No. 15 Westbrook/Old Lyme to a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Northwestern in a Class S state tournament qualifying-round game. Grace Vincent had seven saves for Westbrook/Old Lyme (8-8-2), which moved on to play at No. 2 Canton in a first-round game Tuesday.

    H.S. cross country

    • Jadiel Thomas finished fourth for The Williams School boys’ team at the HVAL Championship on Friday at the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield. Alex Friday, Calvin LaFrance, Conner Gingras and Ken Wang finished out the scoring for the Blues with all five setting personal bests on the course.

    In the girls’ race, Helen Godshall of Williams placed 19th. Anjeliah Llanos-Reyes dropped nearly four minutes from her previous time on the same course. Sabine Balentine, Carlie Burke and Abby Ahlijanian rounded out the team for the Blues.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Skylar Frost scored three goals Friday and the Williams School topped Harvey School 5-1 in Katonah, New York. Frost scored in the first half assisted by Marlee Anselmi. In the second half, Frost scored twice more to complete the hat trick, Anselmi scored and senior captain Katelyn Harvey converted a penalty to score her first career goal. Williams is 9-3-1.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Rocky Hill (R.I.) topped Williams 3-0 Friday. Goalie Baker Katko made 14 saves for Williams (3-10-2).
