    Local roundup: Lewandowski’s goal lifts Bears to win in field hockey opener

    Stonington — Marina Lewandowski scored with 3:25 left in regulation as Stonington beat No. 11 Granby 5-4 in the first round of the CIAC Class S field hockey tournament on Tuesday.

    The No. 6 Bears host No. 19 Stafford in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Anna Lettiere had two goals and an assist, Nora Walsh, Olivia Duhig and Lewandowski had a goal and an assist each, Megan Harris had an assist and Hailey Allard made one save for the Bears (15-2-1), who outshot Granby 19-5.

    In other games:

    • East Lyme beat No. 12 New Milford 1-0 in the first round of the Class M tournament. The No. 5 Vikings (12-5-2) play at No. 4 Wethersfield in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. Sophia Gibson scored and Gracie Lloyd assisted for East Lyme, breaking the school’s single-season assist record with her 15th.

    • Fitch lost to No. 10 Farmington 3-2 in the first round of the Class M tournament. Ada Ellis and Charlotte Driscoll scored goals for the No. 7 Falcons (10-8).

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Robert Stoddard scored twice as East Lyme opened play in the Class L tournament with a 2-1 win over No. 30 Windsor in the first round. The No. 3 Vikings will host No. 14 Simsbury in the second round on Thursday. Dominik Stefanski assisted on the second goal and Ben Johnson made three saves for East Lyme (17-1-1).

    • St. Bernard advanced with a 3-1 win over No. 26 Bloomfield in the first round of the Class S tournament. The No. 7 Saints host No. 10 St. Paul in the second round on Thursday at 2 p.m. Ben Syphrett scored twice, Jose Pacheco had a goal and Tim Regan made 10 saves for the Saints (15-4).

    • Stonington beat No. 16 Woodland 3-0 in the first round of the Class M tournament. The No. 17 Bears (10-8) play at No. 1 Norwich Tech in the second round on Thursday at 2 p.m. Jace Wolfradt, Sawyer VanLew and Sal Alession scored goals, Mike Kennedy and Ethan Cabera had assists and Nick Canella made two saves for Stonington.

    • Wheeler lost to No. 15 Innovation 3-0 in the first round of the Class S tournament. Jon Anderson made five saves for No. 18 Wheeler (10-8).

    • Williams School ended its season with a 2-1 loss to Christian Heritage in the first round of the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament. Brian Li scored the goal, Tyler Gagliardi had an assist and Baker Katko made five saves for The Blues (3-11-2).

    • Montville lost to No. 30 Notre Dame of Fairfield 2-1 in the first round of the Class M tournament. Colby Cowan scored the goal, Madden Brown had an assist and Adonis Santiago made 10 saves for the No. 3 Wolves (14-3-2).

    H.S. volleyball

    • NFA beat No. 23 Wilbur Cross 3-1 in the first round of the Class LL tournament. The No. 10 Wildcats (16-7) play at No. 7 Glastonbury in the second round on Thursday at 6 p.m. Faustine Canales Arrieta had 10 assists and eight digs, Stella Hogan had six kills and 18 digs, Evelina Klyukin had five kills, five aces and 19 digs and Ginger Weston had 16 digs for NFA, which won 25-10, 16-25, 25-16, 25-17.

    • No. 6 Simsbury swept New London in the first round of the Class L tournament, winning 25-15, 25-8, 25-10. Nyarah Dudley had 11 digs, Cashel Jones had seven points and two aces, Malahika Paulo had four points and nine digs and Alyse Manley had nine digs for the No. 27 Whalers (10-13).

    Men’s soccer

    • Connecticut College will play in the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday, playing Denison in Lancaster, Pa., at 6:30 p.m. The Camels (11-1-5) won the Div. III tournament in 2021. Conn suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Amherst ion the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament semifinals.

    The Camels have scored 39 goals and allowed just 14. Jake Creus has seven goals and three assists, Matt Scoffone has seven goals and an assist and Elliot Spatz has four goals and three assists. Goalie Peter Silvester has seven shutouts.

    Friday’s first game pits host Franklin & Marshall against Geneva at 4 p.m. The winners will meet Saturday at 6 p.m.

    College honors

    • Connecticut College sophomore Bridget McGann was recognized by the NESCAC as a second-team selection in field hockey. McGann, who played in 14 games and made 12 starts, led the Camels in scoring with six goals and three assists for 15 points.

    McGann is the first Conn field hockey player in 10 years to receive conference honors in back-to-back seasons, as well as the eighth player in program history to earn the distinction at least twice.

    • Mitchell College junior Dylan Lucey was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s soccer all-conference third team.

    Lucey, the former Lyman Memorial standout, started and played in 15 games for the Mariners this past season and served as a team captain. He led Mitchell with a team-high six goals, five of which came during conference play. Lucey also added one assist in league play and finished the fall with 13 total points.

    Sophomore Flavio Alvarado of New London was named to the all-sportsmanship team.
