    Local roundup: Wheeler advances to Morgan tournament final

    Clinton — Wheeler advanced to the Morgan School Christmas tournament final with a 53-42 win over Branford in a nonleague boys’ basketball game on Wednesday.

    Zane Brewer scored 17 and Deondre Bransford had 15 points for the Lions (3-1), who will face Morgan for the title on Friday at 3 p.m.

    In other games:

    • Nazir Rembert scored 21 points as St. Bernard beat Ridgefield 67-55. Amyre Gray had 16 points and Curtis Marshall scored 11 for the Saints (4-1).

    • Oliver Hibbard scored 20 points as East Lyme beat Montville 77-33 in the Grasso Tech Holiday Classic. Jaylen Hannans had 12 points and Michael Timpano scored 11 for the Vikings. Jace Kobyluck led Montville with 11 points.

    • Grasso Tech beat Bolton 76-28 in the Grasso Tech Holiday Classic. Charis Johnson had 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Nick Stavesky had 20 points, six assists and five steals and Jerry Santiago scored 11 for the Eagles (2-1).

    • Sawyer Nauss and Jace King scored 16 points each as Bacon Academy beat Stafford 59-51 in the Norwich Tech Holiday tournament. Bacon (1-2) plays Putnam in the tournament final on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

    • Putnam beat Norwich Tech 48-43 in the Norwich Tech Holiday tournament. Connor McRae scored 15 points, Collin Schulze had nine points and seven assists, Daniel Hess had seven rebounds and three blocks and Joshua Lodyko had seven rebounds and three steals for the Warriors (0-4).

    • Old Lyme suffered its first loss of the season, falling to host Woodstock Academy 67-58 in overtime. Eddie Fiske had a game-high 22 points for the Wildcats (4-1) while Brady Ericson scored 21 for Woodstock.

    • Waterford lost to Glastonbury 52-35 in the Art Kohs Holiday tournament at Xavier. Parker Spencer scored 12 and Juan Morel Jr. had seven points and seven rebounds for the Lancers.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Mariette El Khoury scored a game-high 24 points as Fitch defeated Ledyard, 65-42. Meleeya Robbins had 14 points for Fitch (3-3) while Gabby Dimock had 13 and Dre’Ana Singleton scored 13. Adrianna Hardison scored 22 points for Ledyard (2-3).

    • Bacon Academy broke open a close game late in the third quarter and defeated Brookfield, 53-31. Katelyn Novak led the Bobcats (4-1) with 20 points and Cara Shea scored eight.

    • Ava Roth had 20 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists as Old Lyme edged Wheeler, 35-30. Kanon Oharu had seven rebounds and six steals for the Wildcats (5-0). Abby Butremovic led the Lions (1-3) with 16 points.

    • Abby Urlich scored 10 points in Norwich Tech’s 43-29 loss to Putnam. Maya Stimson scored nine for the Warriors (2-3).

    • Lyman Memorial lost for the first time this season, falling to Coventry 53-28. Jenny Lopez had 13 points and Ayanna Dillman had nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-1).

    Wrestling

    • Landon Herdic (106), Brock Nowakowski (120), Jackson Sorel (126), John Dexter (150), Naim Wallace (157), Logan Jenkins (175) and Zaire Wallace (190) won via pinfall as Norwich Free Academy defeated Fitch 70-6 in ECC Div. I. The Wildcats are 6-1, 1-0. Brendan Vine (heavyweight) won for Fitch (0-3, 0-1).

    • Ian Cathell (120), Mason Connetti (126), Brady Zadora (132), Aiden Mantia (144), Giovanni Sanchez-Ruelas (157), Ryan Barretta (190), won by pinfall as Killingly defeated Bacon Academy 72-10. Carson Brown (165), Dante Colella (175) won matches for the Bobcats (1-6).

    • Montville lost to Norwalk, 46-30, in a nonleague meet. Adrian Adames (113), Keegan Ingle (120), Luke Chapman (157) and Jordan Delmonico (175) had pins for the Wolves (1-6) and teammates James Linder Jr. (144) and Hector Aponte (165) also won their matches.

    Gymnastics

    • Mary Lord of Stonington finished second on the beam and third all-around as the Bears finished second in a five-school meet that also featured individuals from Grasso Tech, Mercy and Old Saybrook.

    Valley Regional won the meet with 128, followed by Stonington (120.25) and the Haddam-Killingworth/Morgan/Westbrook tri-operative (117.9).

    College honors

    • UConn guard Stephon Castle was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Castle scored eight points, including six in the final 6:30, and grabbed seven rebounds in a 69-65 victory over St. John’s. The freshman had four points, two assists and two blocked shots in a 75-60 loss at Seton Hall.
