    Local roundup: Bacon Academy wins Norwich Tech Holiday tournament

    Norwich -- The Bacon Academy boys’ basketball team rode a strong second half defense to a comeback win over Putnam in the Norwich Tech Holiday tournament championship game on Thursday.

    Theo Koutsofavas and Troy Johnson made key free throws in the last minute to close out the 40-38 victory. Johnson led the Bobcats (2-2) with 13 points and Koutsofavas added nine while Jace King chipped in eight.

    Bacon Academy trailed 27-16 at halftime before mounting a comeback.

    In other games:

    • Tournament MVP JJ Robinson scored 26 points to lead Fitch to a 69-52 win over Smithfield (R.I.) in the Fitch Holiday tournament championship game. Malakhi Sabb had 19 points and five assists and also made the all-tournament team while Robinson added six steals and six assists.

    Ledyard beat Cape Cod Academy (Mass.) 57-53 in the consolation game. Peyton Luther of Ledyard made the all-tournament team along with Shaun Dwyer and Christian Snowman of Smithfield and Markey Santos of Cape Cod.

    • Connor McRae scored 15 points for Norwich Tech in a 59-36 loss to Stafford in the Norwich Tech Holiday tournament consolation game. Collin Schulze had six points and four steals and Daniel Hess added six points and four rebounds for the Warriors (0-5).

    • Waterford lost to Berlin 42-39 in the consolation game of Xavier’s Art Kohs Holiday tournament. Juan Morel Jr. had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Parker Spencer scored 11 and had four assists and Sean Kramer had eight rebounds for the Lancers (1-3).

    • NFA picked up its first win of the season, beating East Hartford 72-67 on Wednesday night. Armanee Davis had 19 points, Keegan Johnston scored 15, Camron Barboza scored 14 and Kody Jamieson had 10 points for the Wildcats (1-3).

    Girls’ basketball

    • Plainfield beat Waterford 34-26. Lucy Walker had 11 points and nine rebounds and Jennie Macca-Barnes scored 10 for the Lancers (0-5). Maddie Nordstrom led Plainfield with 17 points.

    • East Lyme lost to South Windsor 45-34 on Wednesday night. Morgan Romanowicz had nine points and Taylor Kachinsky scored eight for the Vikings (0-6).

    Boy’s swimming

    • Connor Foerster won the 500 freestyle in five minutes, 38.69 seconds in East Lyme/Norwich Free Academy’s 89-77 loss to Milford. Albert Zhu took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.25 and Ryan Zhuang won the 50 freestyle in 25.11 while Mingwen Duan placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.18) and 100 butterfly (1:02.57) for the Vikings (0-2).
