    Local roundup: Sferrazza leads East Lyme co-op past NFA in gymnastics

    North Franklin — Capri Sferrazza led East Lyme/Waterford/St. Bernard to a 139.1-128.2 win over host Norwich Free Academy in an Eastern Connecticut Conference girls’ gymnastics meet on Monday at Thames Valley Gymnastics.

    St. Bernard’s Sferraza won the all-around with a score of 36.35, sweeping the four events. She won the vault (8.55), uneven bars (9.4), floor exercise (9-1) and balance beam (9.3). East Lyme is 3-1 overall and in the ECC.

    St. Bernard’s Olivia Gionet was second in all-around at 35.1 and East Lyme’s Taylor Filosi was third with 34.1. Gionet was second in bars (8.9) beam (9.2) tied for second in vault (8.35) and tied for third in floor (8.65). Filosi was third on beam (9.05) and tied for third in bars (8.6) and floor (8.65).

    NFA (1-1, 1-1) was led by a second-place finish in floor by Allison Wojnar (8.85) and Morgan Sadler (8.35) and Gracyn Goodale (8.35), who tied for second with Gionet in vault.

    Jayla Davis of NFA and Ella Brown of Norwich Tech tied for third in vault at 8.3 and East Lyme’s Sylvia Otter was tied for third on bars at 8.6.

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • Nazim Rembert led a balanced attack with 14 points as No. 6 St. Bernard beat Staples 70-59 in a nonleague game. Curtis Marshall, Tyler Mangual and Amare Marshall each scored 12 for the Saints (9-2). Samson Clachko and Mason Tobias had 12 points each for Staples (5-2).

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Gabby Dimock and Meleeya Robbins scored 13 points each as Fitch beat Waterford 42-36. Dre’Ana Singleton had nine points and six assists, Ada Ellis had 15 rebounds and Synaa Waters had 12 rebounds for the Falcons (8-5). Lucy Walker had 17 points and Lily Davis scored 11 for Waterford (2-9).

    Men’s swimming

    • Connecticut College improved to 6-0 with a 167-131 win over host Colby. Justin Finkel won three events and Evan Lyons, Matthew Morris and Cam Bizjak won two events each for the Camels. Matthew Laclef and Patrick Henry also won events for Conn.

    Women’s swimming

    • Conn College lost to host Colby 177-121. Winning events for the Camels were Lauren Multari, Kate Edison, Rosemary Bonadies and Sarah Franco.

    College honors

    • UConn women’s basketball guard Ashlynn Shade has been selected as the Big East Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season.In two conference wins last week, Shade averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game with no turnovers. She shot 57.1% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range.

    Against Providence last Wednesday, Shade led the game with 17 points and had a season-high four steals. In a win at St. John’s on Saturday, scored 13 points. Shade has started UConn’s last 10 games and is averaging 14.8 points per game on 55.3% shooting.

    A UConn rookie has won the award in nine of 10 weeks this season. KK Arnold (Nov. 20, Nov. 27, Dec. 18, Jan. 1) and Shade (Dec. 11, Dec. 22, Jan. 8, Jan. 15) have each earned the honor four times while Qadence Samuels (Nov. 13) received it once.

    Redshirt junior Paige Bueckers was selected to the weekly honor roll. Bueckers averaged 17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in UConn’s wins while shooting 61.9%.
