    Sun’s DeWanna Bonner being honored at Auburn, will have number retired

    Connecticut Sun All-Star DeWanna Bonner will have her No. 24 raised to the rafters Sunday at Auburn prior to the Tigers’ women’s basketball game against Alabama.

    Bonner is the fifth player to have her number retired at Auburn, joining Carolyn Jones (No. 21), Ruthie Bolton (No. 25), Becky Jackson (No. 34) and Vickie Orr (No. 50).

    Bonner is Auburn’s all-time leading scorer with 2,162 points and third in rebounds with 1,047. The five-time WNBA All-Star was the 2009 SEC Player of the Year while playing for he Tigers and a two-time All-American.

    In a ceremony Friday afternoon on campus, Auburn Mayor Ron Anders proclaimed Jan. 21, 2024, as "DeWanna Bonner Day" in the City of Auburn. The mayor presented Bonner with a proclamation.

    “This is THE Auburn University and for me to be recognized is just unbelievable,” Bonner said in the Friday ceremony. “ This is home for me. This is where I grew up. This is where I left my mom and became a young lady and now I’m coming back to be recognized as a great here is just ... I don’t even have words.

    “... I’m just so grateful and so honored to be in this position and I hope I can always influence and encourage you young ladies to be standing here and beat my records so you can be standing in this same position. All I’m saying is let’s get a win on Sunday because that is one place and one school we do NOT lose to.”
