    Local college roundup: Conn College men fall in NESCAC quarters

    New London — Connecticut College lost to Amherst 65-57 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.

    No. 6 Amherst led 37-26 at hafltime and held on to advance. Charlie Randall led Amherst (15-10) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The No. 3 Camels (18-7) got 20 points form David Murray, 15 points from Elias Espinosa, 10 points from Cam Schainfeld and 10 rebounds from Ben Rice.

    In other games:

    • Coast Guard beat Babson 67-55 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Cameron Brown had 10 points, seven rebounds and six blocks to lead the Bears (15-10, 8-8). Elijah Parent scored 14 points, Jordan Frazer and Mitch Shettles had 10 points each and Bryce VanderWiere had seven rebounds for Coast Guard. The open play in the NEWMAC tournament on Tuesday.

    • Mitchell College lost to Norwich 86-83. in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game and regular season finale. Dontae Pollard had 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead the Mariners (7-18, 4-10). Jaylyn Clardy had 20 points and five rebounds, Wilton Causey had 15 points and seven rebounds and Elijah Miller had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Mitchell.

    Women’s basketball

    • Yasmine Santos had a career-high 40 points and became the the fifth player in team history to score 1,000 career points as Mitchell beat Norwich 77-67 in a GNAC game. Santos scored 20 points in each half and was 18 of 22 from the foul line and had eight rebounds. She scored her 1,000th point on a free throw with 2:50 left putting Mitchell up 69-59.

    New London’s Jamya Beddoe had 16 points and Alexia Watson scored 14 for the Mariners (6-16, 4-10).

    • Kelly Hagerty had 17 points and nine rebounds as Coast Guard beat Mt. Holyoke 60-21 in a NEWMAC game. Kira Wood scored 11 points and Glory Blethen had 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Bears (19-6, 8-3).

    Men’s hockey

    • Conn College closed out the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Bowdoin in a NESCAC game. Kei Tasuda scored, Sean Dynan made 27 saves and Logan Cleary and Pete Stanger had assists for the Camels (9-13-2, 7-11). Conn is the sixth seed in the NESCAC tournament and plays at No. 3 Tufts in the quarterfinals next Saturday.

    Women’s hockey

    • Conn College ended its season with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Colby in a NESCAC game. Devon Galizio made 28 saves for the Camels (7-11-6, 2-11-3).

    Baseball

    • Mitchell opened its season with a pair of wins in Cary, N.C., giving new coach Shawn Gilblair his first career wins. The Mariners swept William Peace 8-4 and 17-5.

    Mitchell won the opener with four runs in the eighth inning. Savier Paige had three hits, including two doubles and Uncasville’s Robbie Delacruz and East Lyme’s Owen Robbins had two hits each. Nicholas Bracale was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in Game 2 and Angel Galindez singled, homered and drove in two runs.
