    Local roundup: Beattie leads Grasso to fourth in state rifle championship

    North Haven — Grasso Tech finished fourth at the Connecticut High School Rifle Championship on Wednesday at Quaker Hill Rod & Gun Club.

    Chase Beattie fired a team-high 184 out of 200 for Grasso Tech, which finished with 909 points. Also scoring for the Eagles were Kanani Brown (182), Aaron Trotochaud (182), Michael Marzec (181) and Charles Goede (180). Goede had a perfect score in the prone position.

    H.S. wrestling

    • The Norwich Free Academy wrestling team finished 10th in the final Connecticut Wrestling Online Media Poll. The Wildcats (22-4) were previously not ranked but finished fifth in the Class LL state championship meet on Feb. 17. Class L champion Xavier was the No. 1 team in the poll. East Lyme/Norwich Tech and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech also received votes.

    High school honors

    • The Eastern Connecticut Conference named Waterford’s Alexander Startz as Boys’ Swimmer of the Year and Waterford’s Amy Poulton as Coach of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Caitlyn Coates had three goals in Coast Guard Academy’s 15-6 loss to Endicott. Addy Bass, Isabella Judge and Mia Becker also scored for the Bears (2-1) , who trailed 8-4 at halftime. Riley Shipman, Mary Wahlin, Isabella Judge and Aislinn Murray had assists for Coast Guard.

    College honors

    • Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference all-conference first team for women’s basketball, finishing with averages of 25.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, both program records.

    Through the end of the regular season, Santos led the GNAC in rebounding and was second in scoring with 564 points and 276 rebounds. She scored in double figures in all 22 games, recording 20-or-more points 17 times and 30-or-more points on six different occasions, becoming the fifth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone.

    Santos was named GNAC Player of the Week three times, was named Player of the Week by the New England Women’s Basketball Association twice and earned a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week twice.

    Also representing the Mariners was sophomore Kyrsten Lucas, named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

    • Two members of the Mitchell College men’s basketball team earned All-GNAC honors, with junior Jaylyn Clardy named to the third team and freshman Elijah Miller honored as a member of the All-Rookie Team. Clardy, who averaged 20 points per game, was named GNAC Player of the Week on Jan. 23 after averaging 26 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists, a performance which also earned him a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. Miller averaged 7.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Also representing the Mariners was junior Wilton Causey, named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

    New London BR

    • New London Babe Ruth will be hold registration for the spring season for players aged 13-16 at the New London High School gym from noon-1 p.m. Sundays, March 3 and March 10.
