Local roundup: NFA knocks off No. 2 St. Joseph in LL girls’ basketball tourney

West Hartford — Norwich Free Academy upset No. 2 St. Joseph 59-28 in the second round of the Class LL girls’ basketball state tournament on Thursday night.

Jordyn Bay-Kent scored 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter for the No. 15 Wildcats, who play at No. 7 Newington in the quarterfinals on Monday. Newington beat No. 10 Newtown 44-27.

Emily Orcutt had 12 points and Nevaeh Yorke scored 10 for NFA (14-9).

    In other games:

    • St. Bernard was eliminated from the Class S tournament, falling to No. 6 East Catholic 66-43. The No. 11 Saints (15-9) took a 34-30 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter before East Catholic pulled away.

Angelica Tompkins scored 28 points for the Saints to finish her career with 1,592, second most in school history. She also set a school record with 200 3-pointers.

    College swimming

    • Connecticut College junior Justin Finkel has been selected to compete at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving men’s championships on March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C. Finkel, who will be making his third NCAA appearance, qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. He owns the nation’s top times in both free events and ranks second in the fly.

Finkel is coming off a dominant weekend in which he won three individual titles, set two meet records and was a repeat selection as NESCAC Swimmer of the Year. He became the fourth student-athlete in league history — and first from Conn College — to earn the honor in consecutive seasons.

Finkel successfully defended all three of his titles from the previous year. On Friday night he won the 500 free, and his time of 4:24.66 broke his own meet record as well as the Colby pool record. He then claimed the top spot in Saturday’s 200 free, pulling away over the final 25 yards with a time of 1:35.69. He completed the trifecta with a dominant swim in the 200 fly on Sunday, finishing more than three seconds ahead of his closest competitor en route to a meet- and pool-record time of 1:44.62.

A total of 284 participants (260 swimmers and 24 divers) will compete in the men’s championships. Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances achieved at the regional diving meets March 1-2.
