    Local roundup: NFA’s Hannah Graham takes the weight throw title at Nike Indoor Nationals

    New York — Norwich Free Academy senior Hannah Graham won the national championship Friday in the emerging elite division of the girls’ weight throw at the Nike Indoor Nationals.

    Graham finished with a personal-best toss of 44 feet, 2.75 inches, finishing ahead of Dana Wauchope of Sanford Calhoun Track Club in New York, who was the runner-up at 42-10.75.

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I shot put champion, Graham will compete beginning next year at Yale University. Graham will also compete in the emerging elite division of the shot put on Sunday.

    NFA’s Lily Gilbert was 11th in the emerging elite division of the girls’ pole vault at 11-02.5 and Kamryn Plikus of Montville was 24th at 10-02.75.

    East Lyme’s Tom Matlock was 20th in the championship division of the boys’ weight throw (59-07.50) and will compete in the championship shot put on Saturday. He is the State Open and New England shot put champ.

    Ledyard’s Mateo Viviano was 18th in the emerging elite boys’ pole vault (13-00.75) and Fitch’s Gianni Colebut was 20th in the emerging elite boys’ high jump (5-10.75). The NFA sprint medley relay team of Conor Gaughan, Oliver Aubin, Kyle Kornacki and Jesse Croteau was eighth in the emerging elite division in 3 minutes, 41.90 seconds.

    College baseball

    • Liam Chamberlain earned a complete-game shutout for the victory and Connor Lewis picked up his first win as head coach as UConn Avery Point defeated Mid-Michigan Community College in the opening game of the Russmat Spring Tournament in Orlando, Florida. The Pointers dropped the second game of the day 9-3 to Kirkwood CC.

    Men’s hockey

    • UConn beat Vermont 5-1 in its regular-season finale on Thursday night. Matthew Wood and Joey Muldowney had two goals each and Arsenii Sergeev made 25 saves for the Huskies (14-18-2, 9-14-1). UConn hosts Vermont in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament on March 13.

    Women’s hockey

    • Top seed UConn hosts Northeastern in the Hockey East tournament final on Saturday at noon. The Huskies (24-7-5) beat Boston College 2-1 in a semifinal on Wednesday.
