Local roundup: Wildcats win Division V semis to earn a trip to the Sun

Middletown — Eddie Fiske finished with 24 points Wednesday to lead the Old Lyme High School boys’ basketball team to a 43-40 win over Litchfield in the semifinals of the Division V boys’ basketball state tournament at Xavier.

The third-seeded Wildcats (19-6) will meet No. 8 Coventry in the championship game at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena. Coventry defeated No. 12 Thomaston 61-50 in the other semifinal.

Old Lyme last played in the 2019 Division V championship game, falling to Innovation by a score of 62-41. The Wildcats were the top seed in Division V in 2020 when the tournament was canceled due to COVID.

In this season’s tournament, Old Lyme, under head coach Brady Sheffield, received a first-round bye before beating Grasso Tech (53-44), Somers (52-47) and Litchfield.

Cole Karpiki had 13 points for Litchfield.

    Men’s basketball

    • David Murray, a senior at Conn College, was named a first team Division III All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Murray was the lone player from the New England Small College Athletic Conference named to the 10-player first team and is the first player in program history to earn NABC All-America first team honors. Conn’s Zach Smith was a second team selection in 1999 while Kareem Tatum was a second team pick in 2000 and honorable mention selection in 2001.

Murray, the 2024 NESCAC Player of the Year, led Conn and ranked among the top five in the league in scoring (17.7 ppg), rebounding (8.9 rpg) and blocks (2.2 bpg) while shooting 58%.

The Camels turned in one of the best seasons in recent memory, going 18-7 overall and finishing third in the NESCAC with an 8-2 league record. The 18 wins are the most since 2001, and the eight league victories are the most since the NESCAC began championship play in 2000-01.

    Women’s basketball

    • Mitchell College senior forward Yasmine Santos was named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 1 third team. Santos joins 2023 graduate Amina Wiley as the only players in program history to earn all-region recognition.

Santos averaged 25.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, both Division III-era program records for the Mariners, finishing with 564 points and 276 rebounds. Santos added 2.6 steals and 2.2 assists per game, while shooting 45.4% from the floor and 76% from the free throw line.

Her 25.6 points per game ranks in the top five nationally at the Division III level. Santos scored in double-figures in all 22 games, recorded 20 or more points 17 times and 30 or more points on six different occasions, highlighted by a career-high 40 points in a conference victory over Norwich.

The Mariners finished their first season as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a 6-16 overall record.
