    Local roundup: East Lyme grad Megan Bauman leads NYU to Division III national final

    Columbus, Ohio — East Lyme High School graduate Megan Bauman finished with six points, six rebounds and a pair of assists as the New York University women’s basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Transylvania 57-42 in the Division III NCAA tournament Final Four on Thursday night.

    The top-ranked Violets (30-0) will meet Smith in the national championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Capital Center Performance Arena in Columbus.

    Bauman, a 5-foot-7 guard, is a graduate transfer, playing for four years at Babson before joining NYU this season. Headed into Thursday night’s game, she was averaging 7.9 points and a team-high 4.6 assists. Bauman led the nation in free throw shooting last year at Babson (.930) and ranks first among active Division III players in that category (.873), while also ranking second in total assists (590).

    Bauman received first team All-University Athletic Association honors and was recently named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 4 first team.

    NYU reached the Final Four with a 68-46 victory over Scranton in an Elite Eight matchup last Saturday at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan, as Bauman finished with 11 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in 39 minutes.

    The Violets are playing in their first Final Four since 2007 and are seeking their first national championship since 1997.

    Transylvania, which entered the game at 31-0, defeated NYU in last year’s Elite Eight.

    College baseball

    • UConn Avery Point wrapped up its spring break trip to Orlando, Florida with a 5-4 win over Moraine Valley Community College (Illinois). The Pointers finished the trip 3-3. Freshmen right-hander Dan Lang got the win for Avery Point, striking out seven over the final four innings, allowing two hits. Freshman John Bureau (East Lyme) got the Pointers on the board with a two-run double in the third inning and freshman Derrel Mitchell (New London) had the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to put them in the lead for good. Freshman Will Estronza contributed two hits.

    • Parker Madden had three hits for Coast Guard, including a home run, and Nathan Stafford also homered for the Bears in a 7-6 loss to Lesley on the final day of their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Lesley scored three in the seventh and three in the ninth for the victory. Coast Guard finished the trip 4-2.
