    Local roundup: Mitchell sweeps doubleheader from NEC in baseball

    New London — Mitchell College swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader from New England College on Friday.

    The Mariners (13-6, 4-0) won the opener 4-1 and the second game 10-3. Game 2 didn’t count toward GNAC standings.

    Camren Varney went seven innings for the win in the opener, allowing four hits and one run over seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Jacob Quiles finished up with two hitless innings to earn a save.

    Angel Galindez drove in two runs and the Mariners took a 2-1 lead with Owen Robbins of East Lyme scored on an error. Adam Vartanian and Jack Hayes had three hits each and Justin Adorno had an RBI tipled for Mitchell.

    Savier Paige hit a two-run, inside the park homer for the Mariners in Game 2. Michael Ficocelli, Adorno, Paige and Galindez had two hits each. Thai-ler Sestokas threw five shutout innings for the win.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Campbell Johnston had five goals and two assists to lead Conn College past Western Connecticut State 15-8 Wednesday. Caroline Bruce added four goals and one assist and Aine Downey had three goals and one assist. Viollette Nidds got the start in goal for the Camels (5-3) and finished with eight saves. Conn led 4-3 after one quarter, but stretched that to 9-3 at halftime, getting second quarter goals from Janet Howard (2), Bruce (2) and Johnston. Fitch High school grad Molly Bresnahan made 10 saves in goal for Western Connecticut.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Trinity Ambruso of NFA was honored as the gymnast of the year on Tuesday night by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. Ambruso won the CIAC State Open all-around title and was tied for second in all-around at the New England meet.

    Ambruso’s teammate Allison Wojnar joined her on the all-state team as a second-team selection. Emma McMillan of NFA was also honored as the CHSCA Assistant Coach of the Year.
