H.S. roundup: Montville rolls by New London in baseball opener

Montville — Eric Richmond had three hits and three RBI Saturday, leading the Montville High School baseball team to an 11-1 win over New London.
Cole Terni, the winning pitcher, also had three RBI. The Wolves are 1-0. Juan Santiago Droz had three hits for the Whalers (0-1).
In other games:
• Sean Garvin had three hits as Griswold defeated Old Lyme 12-4. Griswold (1-0) scored eight runs in the fourth inning.
• Dom Pontbriant struck out 14 as Lyman Memorial defeated Norwich Tech, 11-1 in five innings. Alex Ortiz and Jeremiah Bobbi had three hits apiece for the Bulldogs (1-0).
Softball
• Ava Roth went 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBI — eclipsing 100 hits in her career — as Old Lyme blanked Portland, 16-0. Sybil Neary had three hits for the Wildcats (1-0) and Emma Baylor struck out 13.
• Hamden scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and rallied past New London, 9-8. Alina Skrabacz struck out 12 for the Whalers (0-1), while Nichelle Tucker had two triples and two RBI.
• Kayla Terni had three hits and six RBI as Montville defeated Putnam, 20-1. Savannah Malinowsky had three hits and three runs scored for the Wolves (1-0), while Ava Gero and Abby Daniewicz had two hits apiece.
• Fitch lost its season opener to No. 1 Masuk, 10-2. Grace Cosmopoulos hit a two-run home run for the Falcons (0-1).
Rowing
• Both the East Lyme boys’ and girls’ varsity eights defeated Guilford on Quonnipaug Lake in Guilford.
East Lyme’s girls' first varsity eight won with a time of 6:20, by eleven seconds over Guilford. Rowers were Sofia Mauri, Fiona Samuelson (capt), Olivia Brown, Elsie Jacobitz, Ryleigh Erban, Shylah Harris, Dalynn Jackson, Sophia VanDerMaelen, and Katy Avery.
The boys won in 5:30, also eleven seconds over Guilford. Rowers: Jack Wojcik, Aiden Minogue, Kai Jolly-Ballantine, Justin Northcott, Nate Rommal, Anthony Goeschel, Zane Cappon, Rowan Wilson, Everett Trusler.
