    Local roundup: Mitchell clinches GNAC baseball title

    New London — The Mitchell College baseball team clinched the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season title in its first year in the league with a doubleheader sweep of Elms College on Saturday.

    Late game outbursts played a big role in both wins.

    Jack Hayes’ RBI triple broke a 2-2 tie and highlighted four-run eighth inning in a 6-2 victory in game one. Hayes finished with two hits and two RBI and Angel Galindez added two hits and RBI while Chris Gibbs allowed two runs and scattered nine hits to earn the win and Cam Varney struck out the side in the ninth to pick up the save.

    In a 15-8 win in game two, the Mariners scored eight runs in the eighth to take the lead, with Chas Terni Jr. of Montville and Michael Gajda each delivering two-run hits. Hayes went 4 for 6 with three RBI while Gadja had three hits and four RBI and Terni two hits and three RBI for the Mariners (27-9, 14-1).

    Montville’s Robbie DelaCruz and Cole Lalli had three hits apiece.

    In other games:

    • Coast Guard Academy split a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference doubleheader with Babson, winning 4-3 in 10 innings and losing 6-4 in 10 innings. Richard Barkley’s RBI double won the first game for the Bears (21-9, 10-3), who retained their hold on second place in the league. Barkley and Parker Madden finished with three hits apiece and reliever Raymond Priddy pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win. Nathan Stafford had two hits and two RBI in the second game.

    H.S. baseball

    • Senior left-hander Alex Dreyfus pitched a two-hit complete game, lifting the East Lyme to a 3-0 win over Coventry. Dreyfus, who will play baseball in college at Central Connecticut, struck out 14. Liam Cochrane had two hits for East Lyme (7-3), winners of four straight.

    • Freshman Chase Malbaurn pitched a complete game five-hitter and Montville defeated Putnam 10-1. Aidan Johnson doubled twice and scored two runs for Montville (9-3).

    • Woodstock Academy scored four runs in the third inning and defeated Stonington, 7-3. Wyatt Verbridge had a hit, run scored and an RBI for the Bears (6-5).

    • Dom Pontbriant struck out 11 over six innings and Lyman Memorial blanked Norwich Free Academy 10-0. Pontbriant also had three hits for the Bulldogs (7-3). Jared Russo and Nick Chalifoux had two hits apiece for Lyman.

    • Martin Light allowed five hits over 6.2 innings and St. Bernard defeated Fitch, 8-1. Desmond Powers had three hits and three RBI for the Saints (5-4) and Colin O’Leary had three hits and two RBI. Patrick Lindy singled and doubled for Fitch (3-7).

    • Kyami Boyce threw a shutout as Griswold beat Wheeler 5-0. Andrew Hardin had two hits for the Wolverines (8-3) and Boyce allowed eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Kyle Kessler, James Main and Noah Klewin had two hits each for Wheeler (6-2).

    H.S. softball

    • Annabelle Wenzel pitched a perfect game with 11 strikeouts and St. Bernard blanked New London 13-0. Angelica Tompkins went 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. The Saints are 4-5. New London is 2-6.

    • Brielle Kenney pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Waterford blanked Killingly, 5-0. Ava Waddington had two hits and an RBI and Grace Muti drove in two runs for the Lancers (9-3).

    • Ava Korineck’s RBI triple broke a tie score and East Lyme defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield, 5-1. Grace DuBrava added a two-run double while Abby Robinson struck out 11 batters for the Vikings (7-4).

    College softball

    • Julia Breidenthal’s three-run home run capped a seven-run seventh inning, as Coast Guard Academy rallied past WPI, 10-7, in the second game of a NEWMAC doubleheader. Dana Walker went 2-for-3, including a home run, and had two RBI while Christine Carey had a single, double and an RBI for the Bears(12-18, 10-6), who lost the first game 9-0.

    • Mitchell College split a GNAC doubleheader with Rivier College, winning 6-1 and losing 3-1. Winning pitcher Katelyn Lipsky tossed a two-hitter in the game one, striking out nine and walking four, while Gemma Landry went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Emma LaBreck had three hits and an RBI and Cassandra Roman (New London) had two hits and RBI. Roman led the Mariners (15-17, 11-5) with two hits in game two.

    Girls’ tennis

    • East Lyme defeated Windham, 7-0. Valentina Schiano, Isabella Villarreal, Avery Rindell and Nina McKiernan won in singles for the Vikings (4-3).

    Boys’ tennis

    • Ledyard defeated Killingly, 7-0 in ECC Div. II. Sebastian Fieldsend, Malloch Allison, Clark Ysewyn, Ben Wolford won in singles for Ledyard (5-3, 3-0). The doubles teams of Tyler Mileski/Jordan Yeung, Hendrick Trieu/Luke Anderson, Aiden Williams/Colin Westkott were winners for the Colonels.

    Men’s tennis

    • Connecticut College defeated nationally ranked Trinity, 5-4, in a NESCAC match. Walker Mulligan secured the deciding point at No. 5 singles, winning in a third-set tiebreaker for the Camels (2-7).

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • Bacon Academy beat Fitch 182-197 on Friday. Alex Gallardo of Bacon (2=2) was the medalist with a 38. Teammate John Ceruti and Gianni Drab of Fitch (1-5) shot 45s.

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Eric Key had four goals and one assist and Ryan Hunter had three goals and two assists for Coast Guard in a 13-7 loss to Babson in the NEWMAC. The Bears fell to 2-0, 1-6.
