    Local roundup: Mariners have one to go for GNAC baseball championship

    New London — Chris Gibbs allowed one run over seven innings to lead the top-seeded Mitchell College baseball team past No. 2 Johnson & Wales 3-1 in Game 1 of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference best-of-three championship series Thursday.

    The Mariners (31-10) will play Johnson & Wales in Game 2 of the series beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, needing just one win to capture the GNAC championship in their inaugural season in the conference.

    Gibbs scattered seven hits, walked four and struck out a season-high 10. Senior Camren Varney tied the program record with his fourth save, tossing 1.2 innings to shut the door, surrendering one hit and striking out two.

    Angel Galindez and Michael Gajda had two hits each for Mitchell.

    H.S. girls’ lacrosse

    • Adyson Wiseman scored 2 minutes, 7 seconds into overtime and Waterford edged East Lyme 11-10. Wiseman, Sadie Tiven and Quinn Brigham had three goals apiece for Waterford (12-1). Gianna DiLoreto scored four goals for the Vikings (4-9).

    • Molly Page had four goals and two assists and Norwich Free Academy edged Ledyard 8-7. The Wildcats are 8-5. Tatianna Irizarry and Helena Robinson had three goals apiece for Ledyard (9-4).

    • Fitch defeated Stonington 10-4. Gabby Dimock had four goals, Bethany Lovering three goals and three assists and Brooke Bergendahl three goals for Fitch (9-3). Emma Logel had three goals for Stonington (7-7).

    • Killingly defeated Montville 15-6. Karissa Hochdorfer and Kylie Spreng had two goals apiece for the Wolves (4-8) and Katie Koning made 18 saves.

    • Elle Reid had three goals and one assist in The Williams School’s 17-5 loss Wednesday against Rocky Hill (R.I.). Annie Gingras added one goal and two assists for Williams (9-5) will host the semifinals of the HVAL tournament at 4 p.m. Monday.

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Woodstock Academy defeated Ledyard/Griswold 14-3. Robert Jackson, Brian Johnson and Sean Harren scored for the Colonels (2-11).

    • Will Sluggett scored eight goals and St. Bernard/Wheeler defeated Montville 14-9. Ben Howes scored three times for the Saints (9-4). Jacob Watson, Chris Baukus and Gavin Delucia had three goals apiece for Montville (3-11).

    • Old Lyme defeated Cromwell 20-1 in the Shoreline Conference. Mason Bussman led the Wildcats (8-5, 6-4) with seven goals.

    • Tyler Gagliardi had four goals for Williams in a 13-3 win over Forman on Wednesday, completing the regular season for the Blues. Baker Katko, Brendan Li and Henry Champagne added two goals apiece, Finn McCann had three assists and Henry Gallagher made 12 saves in goal. Williams (10-3) will play in the HVAL playoffs beginning next week.

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Old Lyme defeated Haddam-Killingworth 5-2. Mason Wells-Chris Dagher, Dylan Paynter-Foster Richardell and Rowan Hovey-Ryan Miller won in doubles for the Wildcats (10-3).

    • Williams ended its season with a 4-3 win over Rectory. Jonathan Patton, Emilia Leeming and Sadie Rotolo won in singles for Williams while Will Corkhill-Tyler Lui won in doubles. On Wednesday, Rotolo won her No. 4 singles match and also picked up a victory along with Corkhill at No. 1 doubles as Williams lost to the Country School 5-2. Leeming lost a close 8-6 decision for the Blues.

    H.S. girls’ tennis

    • St. Bernard defeated Lyman Memorial 5-2 in ECC Division III. Sasha Manzione, Blake Murray, Meri Kambolli and Zhuning Gao won in singles for the Saints (9-2, 6-0).

    • Sofia Hill and Emma Collins won singles matches for Lyman Memorial on Wednesday in a 5-2 victory over New London in ECC Division III. Widbery Ledoux won at No. 1 singles for New London (2-10, 0-6).

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • Liam O’Neil fired a 41 and Marcelo Raposo a 43 to lead NFA past Waterford 5-2 at Norwich Golf Course. NFA won the medal points 175-187. Lucas Vincenti was the low scorer for Waterford (1-8) with a 44. NFA is 6-2.

    • Norwich Tech defeated Grasso Tech 178-197 at Norwich Golf Course. Medalist Jack Gahrman led Norwich Tech with a 38.

    • Wheeler’s Cameron Conway had a hole-in-one on the 143-yard second hole at Stonington Country Club, leading Wheeler to a 7-0 win over Griswold. Conway, Keiran Boscoe and Tyler Signore each shot 37 for the Lions (10-0).

    • Killingly defeated Fitch 5.5-1.5 at Shennecossett Golf Course. Medalist Charlie Bergendahl shot 41 for Fitch (1-8).

    H.S. volleyball

    • Glastonbury defeated NFA 25-22, 25-18, 25-21. Tyler McDermott had 11 kills and Landon Little 12 assists for NFA (13-4).

    H.S. boys’ track

    • Griswold remained unbeaten in ECC Division III on Wednesday with an 81.67-59.33 victory over Plainfield, also beating Wheeler 105-30. Plainfield also beat Wheeler 96-32. Matthew Perea won the shot put and discus for Griswold (8-1, 3-0) and Tycen LaBelle won the 800 meters and joined Dylan Bailey, Xzavier De La Rosa and Maxwell Brown in winning the 4x800 relay. Tyler Scarchilli won the 100, 200 and ran a leg of the winning 4x100 relay for Wheeler (1-8).

    H.S. girls’ track

    • Kandyce Bothelo (high jump, 100 hurdles) and Emily Eliasson (triple jump, 400) won two events each as Griswold earned a sweep Wednesday against Plainfield (72-55 in ECC Division III) and Wheeler 77-45. Plainfield also topped Wheeler 58-40. Kaitlyn Kumpf won the 1,600 and 3,200 for Wheeler, as well as leading the 4x400 relay to victory. Griswold is 7-2 overall, 2-1 in Division III. Wheeler is 0-9.
