    Local roundup: UConn women set to begin two-game series with Southern Cal

    Storrs — The UConn women’s basketball team defeated Southern California 80-73 in the Elite Eight in Portland, California, during the 2024 NCAA tournament, outdueling the Trojans and freshman All-American JuJu Watkins.

    UConn announced Monday that it will face USC during the regular-season beginning next season with the start of a two-game series. USC will travel to Connecticut on Saturday, Dec. 21 to face off against the Huskies on Fox at a site and time to be announced.

    UConn will then travel to play USC in Los Angeles during the 2025-26 season.

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Ethan LoVetere’s overtime goal lifted Bacon Academy past St. Bernard 6-5 in ECC Division II. LoVetere finished with three goals and an assist and goalie Chase Goulet made 15 saves while Jameson Pirro had two goals and an assist and Talan Ladyga also scored for the Bobcats (9-3, 5-0). Noah Couter had two goals and an assist for the Saints (9-5, 5-2), Will Sluggett had two goals and Zack Zickmann added a goal and an assist.

    H.S. girls’ lacrosse

    • Gabby Dimock had four goals, two assists and nine draw controls for Fitch in a 16-0 shutout of Woodstock Academy in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I. Goalie Elaina Brookhart had six saves while Bethany Lovering had four goals, six assists and three caused turnovers, Lauren Podurgiel had three goals and Stella Connell added two goals and three assists for the Falcons (10-3, 5-1).

    • Katheryn DelGrosso scored four goals while Grace Cassata, Ellen Anderson and Sophia Gouveia each added three in Wheeler’s 14-4 win over Killingly in ECC Division III. Naomi Boord also scored a goal and Anna Barber made eight saves for the Lions (10-3, 6-0).

    • Sydney Goulding scored three goals and Alexis Antonellis added two for Old Lyme in an 8-7 loss to North Branford in the Shoreline Conference. Ella Curtiss-Reardon had a goal and two assists for the Wildcats (11-3, 10-1).

    • Skylar Frost contributed six goals, three assists and seven ground balls to propel Williams School past Christian Heritage 15-8 in the HVAL semifinals. Ally Iacobellis had five goals and an assist while Elle Reid had two goals and 12 draw controls and goalie Chloe Crimmins made 12 saves for the Blues (10-5).

    H.S. girls’ track

    • Woodstock Academy beat Norwich Free Academy 88-62 to win the ECC Division I title. Juliet Allard won the 100 (12.7 seconds), 200 (25.7), 300 hurdles (47.7) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 team for Woodstock. Hannah Graham finished first in the shot put (34 feet, 8.25 inches) and discus (117-2) for the Wildcats (3-1, 2-1) and Riley Davis won the 400 (62.2) and long jump (16-5).

    H.S. boys’ track

    • Chris Amy set a school record in the discus at 167-2 and also won the shot put, leading NFA over Woodstock 111.5-38.5 in an ECC Division I meet. Fernando Flores took first in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles for the Wildcats (2-2, 1-2) and Reese Newson won the 200 and pole vault.

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • NFA’s Nick Wigfield and Marcelo Raposo each fired a 39 and shared medalist honors with Bacon Academy’s Alex Gallardo, helping the Wildcats to a 6-1 win at Norwich Golf Course. NFA (7-2) took the team medal points 166-184. The Bobcats are 5-5.

    H.S. girls’ golf

    • Stonington won the ECC match over NFA by one stroke, 215-216, at Elmridge Golf Course. Erin O’Farrell was the medalist with a 49 for the Wildcats (7-2, 5-2). Adilyn Risley had low score (50) for the Bears (5-4, 5-4).
