    H.S. baseball roundup: ECC semifinals are set for Dodd after a solid day of pitching

    Dominant starting pitching highlighted Eastern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament quarterfinal action on Wednesday.

    East Lyme’s Alex Dreyfus, Lyman Memorial’s Dominic Pontbriant, Fitch’s Trace Morales and Killingly’s Landon Mazzi led their respective teams to victories with impressive efforts on the mound.

    Semifinal games will be held Thursday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

    In Division I, No. 1 Woodstock will play No. 4 Fitch at 11 a.m. and No. 3 East Lyme will face No. 7 Killingly at 6:30 p.m.

    In Division II, No. 1 Lyman Memorial will take on No. 4 Wheeler at 1:30 p.m. and No. 2 Griswold will play No. 3 Stonington at 4 p.m.

    Semifinal winners will compete for ECC titles on Friday at Dodd Stadium.

    In game action:

    • No. 3 East Lyme jumped out to two-run lead in the third inning and held on to beat No. 6 Waterford 3-2 in Division I. Dreyfus earned the win, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out 12 and walking one in six innings and Liam Joyce picked up the save. Garrison Briggs doubled and Tanner O’Brien had a single and an RBI for the Vikings (14-7). Quinn Speller had two hits for the Lancers (13-8).

    • Pontbriant pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out 12, in No. 1 Lyman Memorial’s 10-0 win over No. 8 Plainfield in Division II. Pontbriant also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Alex Ortiz had a single, double and four RBI for the Bulldogs (16-5).

    • Morales scattered five hits, struck out four and didn’t issue a walk in a complete-game performance, leading No. 4 Fitch past No. 5 Norwich Free Academy 4-0 in Division I. Donte Valentine broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the sixth, knocking in Pat Lindy who had doubled. Griffin Pollard, Dom Zuliani and Nate Virtue had two hits apiece for the Falcons (11-10).

    • No. 4 Wheeler scored five runs in the third inning to take a six-run lead and went on to defeat No. 5 Montville 8-7 in Division II. James Main had two hits and three RBI for the Lions (15-5) and Sean Bergel added two hits. Eric Richmond chipped in three hits and two RBI for the Wolves (13-8).

    • No. 3 Stonington scored three runs in first, third and fourth innings to beat No. 6 Bacon Academy 9-3 in Division II. Wyatt Verbridge had a single, double and three RBI for the Bears (12-8) and winning pitcher Dylan Cimini had two hits. Chris Lusignan homered for the Bobcats (11-10) and Noah Crowell added two hits.

    • No. 7 Killingly knocked off No. 2 St. Bernard 7-0 in Division I behind the pitching of Manzi, who tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11. Michael Fabiano had three hits for Killingly. The Saints fell to 15-6.

    • Top-seeded Woodstock Academy blanked No. 8 Ledyard 10-0 in Division I in a game shortened to five innings. Caleb Simoneau had three hits for Woodstock and Riley O’Brien added three RBI.
